How many sightseeing trains in CO?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, August 25, 2001 1:27 PM
My daughter is a huge fan of trains and we would like to take her on all the trains in CO. We know about the Durango Silverton,Cumbres and Toltec,Georgetown Loop. Are there any more? Also, are there any good railroad museums in CO?
Thanks for your help,

Golden also operates some equipment on special dates - you will need a schedule from them.

While it might not meet everyone's definition of a "sightseeing train" in the same sense as the three steam-powered operations that you've mentioned, the Manitou and Pikes Peak cog railroad that runs from Manitou Springs up to the top of Pikes Peak is an interesting ride and has some impressive scenery. When I rode it (10+ years ago), they were using Swiss-built diesel/hydraulic railcar sets that were more like big municipal buses, but it's still technically a railroad operation and is run as such. I think that they have (had?) one of their cog-drive steam locos restored and used for special occations, but not routinely at that time.
A hint - anyone who rides to the top better be prepared to feel a bit short of breath - the 14,000+ foot elevation makes the air a bit "thin" up there. It's worth it for the view, though.
