Southern's high hood SD40-2 and SD45's. They had an aggressive look. I think the paint scheme helped too.

No disrespect intended to Alco PA1 fans, but as popular as it was with railroads and as often is it's been seen in Hollywood movies and tv shows, the E7 is truly the American passenger locomotive icon!

The EMD F7. It's the first train I ever remember seeing and is always what I think when someone says the word "train". The style defined a generation.

The year was 1964, I was four years old and we were going to Phoenix AZ from Syracuse IN.

My father took a photo of me standing behind my mother clutching her dress watching the lead locomotive a scant 30 feet away towering over me approaching the station.

The line was B&O, and the train was the Capitol Limited.

And I was hooked!!!!!!!!!

I agree with AntonioFP45 - the EMD 'E' series are it! I really like the raked nose on the earlier E3 to E6!

Gotta be an ALCo C-630 or C-636 with ALCo's Hi-AD truck, hands down. You can tell that they are powerful just by looking at them! [:)][:D][8D][;)]

Kozzie: the Dash 2 (-2) in the any EMD model (not rebuilds) means that the unit has the (new in '72) Dash 2 style modular electrical cabinet (each component is on its own removable card), locomotive models before the Dash 2 line had a somewhat "hardwired" electrical cabinet, as the individual components are NOT removeable for easy access/maintainence.

I have a Kato HO SD45 in Rio Grande colour scheme - not sure if it's a Dash 2.
But it looks great ,and it goes like cream over jelly!
(oops - not your jelly but jello in US English - I have to watch that - the little differences in the various English's ha ha...)

The D&RGW's F-7's that powered the California Zephyr and the Rio Grande Zephyr and after Amtrak ran via the D&RGW, occasionally the Ski Train. But then these are always my favorite trains, bar none. Dave Klepper

For Passenger Service the Alco PA in the Santa Fe paint scheme was a beauty. I do like the early E units the slopped nose is cool looking. The E 8/9 are a nice looking loco (but not in BN green/white). The passenger units must have the gyralite nose light too, that really makes them look sharp.

For Freight Service NOTHING beats the Alco RS series (RS-1, RS-2, RS -3). The high hoods looked great and meant business. Of course I like any Alco with a high hood. Actually I like any Alco period. As Will Rogers might have said, I have never met an Alco I didn't like. ( Well he MIGHT have said it.) [;)]

You can keep anything built after 1960 except the GP-38. They got moxey.

Impossible to pick just one...so let's go with F units (especially F-9 and FL-9), E units (especially E-8 and E-9), F45 and FP45, SD45, DDA40X, SD-9, and lately the GP60M (which kind of reminds me of the old F units in its overall scale, kind of squat and powerful looking). Eolafan

SD40-2 and SD9 from any railroad. C44-9W in CNW paint only. All other dash-9s are boring. Well SP is ok.

My all time favorite desel of all time was the Illinois Central E-8 in its Choclate, Orange and Yellow paint . This was only applied to the passenger fleet before Amtrack.
