April issue of Trains...Great..!
Posted by Modelcar on Sunday, February 29, 2004 12:57 PM
....A great big yes for the feature in the April issue of trains...Mountain Railroading. Just received my copy yesterday but this is a subject that has a great interest to me. So I say thanks to editor Mark and staff. Great photos..!
I grew up in an area where we saw plenty of eastern mountain operations so I know this will be interesting.

And to some of the Trains staff discussing last month when we recieved our magazines...This time it was right on time. Last month, 9 days to Indiana.

Is there an article on Saluda and Cajon? I am just wondering because I won't be able to pick my copy up until the second Tuesday of March. So any info on it will be helpful.

...I haven't gotten into reading it yet but I did notice a pic of the bottom of Saluda....Sad that that route is closed now. I visited there back just a few years ago, several times to witness some action from the little town but no luck....Stopped on way back from Florida in the spring and waited for hours....and saw no action...Little did I know at that time it would be closed or I might have waited all day to see an operation. It is just hard to believe looking down that grade that trains were able to come up it with tonnage...!

I thought Saluda was at the bottom of the grade. I guess I was wrong on this. Ok, let me know if there is anything else on this. I have been to Cajon and if anybody ever gets the chance to go. Please do not pass it up, it is well worth the trip. There is constant traffic, there isn't no people out there besides other railfans. I really didn't get the chance to stop and really watch but I was there long enough to see what it was like. I went there, but it was during a vacation, had so much to see and not enough time :((. Seen Tehachapi, but it was getting late in the day and was having some trouble seeing everything. I will make it back to both of these mecca's and spend some time there.

I think that the sd-18's with alco trucks on page 35 are the coolest!
What is going on with the challenger on page 102? Looks like it is having problems.

....The railroad comes up and through the center of the town of Saluda...and it is located right at the summit of the grades....You can stand there and look down both grades. What a shame the traffic has stopped for now...and who knows if it ever will resume.

Once again, I have yet to receive mine (delaware). 3rd month in a row. Getting tired of seeing it on the news stands before I receive it.

Dru: While you are waiting for your issue go to Google and input info on Saluda and you can bring up some info on the location...Find the right web site and it will have some pic's.
