Railroad on Hunting Island, SC
Posted by GP-9_Man11786 on Saturday, May 31, 2008 7:06 PM
When visting Hunting Island State Park, about 15 miles east of Beaufort, SC and about and hour from where I live, I learned of a very interesting railroad. When the Hunting Island Lighthouse was still active a narrow-guage tramway was used to bring lamp oil and other supplies from the docks to the lighthouse and its support structures. Here's a link to an article about the lighthouse, which mentions the tramway http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=332. At the park they have a section of track and a four-wheeled flatcar on display. Does anybody know of any other such operations in the  US? What kind of motive power was used? My guese would be horse as maintaining a locomotive at such a remote location would be costly and dificult. Anyway, just thought I'd share this.
