That was really neat! My only issue was that it took too short to build. Such an operation would probably really have taken over a year to set up.
Just out of curiosity, is American Samoa exactly on the other side of the world from Montreal; that is, if you dug a tunnel straight down from Montreal, would you actually come up in American Samoa? I once read one of those "unexplained phenomena" books about the Bermuda Triangle, and it said that some people reported seeing strange lights in the sky at the equivalent latitude in the Southern Hemisphere of the atomic blasts on Japan, as well as some of the American and Soviet nuclear tests of the '50s and '60s.
I could also sympathize quite a bit with the character in this story, since I have sort of an email "girlfriend" from Australia (I'm from Southern California). We've been sending email off and on for about a year and a half now after I read a story of hers on Fanfiction.net. Although I haven't heard from her for a while. But she has given me her address, and I hers, and I recently sent her a present for Valentine's Day.

If anyone's up to the challenge, how about a story about the Bering Strait Tunnel (obviously a bit less science-fictiony than a wormhole between Canada and Samoa), between Alaska and Russia? Of course, it could also be set in the same ficitional universe as the Occurence, and references could be made to it, or perhaps the main characters could be on the first train (or driving it) between America, Canada, and Asia. Maybe, if you and Ra'akone are okay with it, I might work on it this summer if no one else does...
No offense, but you should give a tad more credit to the scientists at Laval University who created the Occurence in the first place. We haven't even heard their names. But it's still an excellent piece of work.
Oh, and I've also written some anime-based fanfiction (Urusei Yatsura and Oh My Goddess). Check my stuff out at Fanfiction.net (my name there is andyjay18). As a fellow anime-fan, will there be any locos or train cars named the Ranma Saotome, Lum, or Belldandy?

If you want good railroad fiction, check out the novel, Two Track Main. The author
was unhappy with his home town's lack of railroads, so he went back in history and created additional lines coming into town. He then tells a story about various characters who were impacted by the change from steam to diesels back in the 1950's. Includes lots of action, disasters, violence, and romance. Look up Two Track Main at the Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and Xlibris web sites.

I just finished reading the first chapter of your story. This is an intriguing idea and was fun to read. Having been busy, I have not started reading the rest, but I fully intend to do that. Thanks for posting the info. MOre comments from me as I continue to read. Keep up the good work!

I'm glad you liked it, nance69. Maybe I should get started on it. BNSFkline started helping me around chapter 3.
I have another rail related story that's really weird....... http://www.fictionpress.com/read.php?storyid=1524880 (mentioned in a previous post here) It takes place in a different future from Between Us No Mountains.....and stars Pika Sinasina.....this woman from another planet who's an engineer.....except rather than just driving the locomotive.....she POWERS it.
