Kansas City Area & The Underground Storage Facilities.........."HELP"

Just a little dimensional info; My trailer 13'-6" high only had about 6 inches of clearance above through out the entire facility. Width was barely wide enough for two cars to pass each other. Roadways were all one way counter clockwise except for the entryway. Rail line was dug out deeper to accomodate railcars. Truck docks also. Aprox. a half to one mile in depth ( horisontaly from entrance ) . Stone pillars ( left unexcavated ) if I can remember were aprox. 15' square & spaced about every 20' to 30' apart to prevent caveins. The product I loaded I believe was big bulk bags of startch addatives for Campbells Soup in Chicago IL. Location; Independence Mo. A suburb of Kansas City Mo. & was open to the public years ago & hopefully yet . PS. This is one dig that I truely dig,........ Ya dig. Thanks for all of your comments.

I believe they said It was Kansas City. For one they said BN connected to it (I believe) and they compared it to Arrowhead Stadium (home of the Kansas City Cheifs).

You probably refer to "Iron Mountain" that is in the PA area I think everything created in this nation that has a cultural or military/government significance is stored here. Apparently there is sufficient room to store 300 more years worth of stuff. There are other installations similar to this around the USA.

I saw a tv show on that once. Doesn't the BN connect with it? I believe they said it was the size of 36 arrow head stadiums (the stadium where the Cheifs play to all of you non football knowers out their. It also said the store old movies down there because the cold air keeps them in good condition. Thanks for the infromation you all.

I used to longhaul too. There are several places in KC in the Riverboat Casino area where we use to run "Nordic" loads from a small hill (Ok.. mountain)

There is another in Carthage Mo off Civil War Road... I never been to the one in Independence however.

There is one out west that was a pit in the ground and a shack. They would check my papers while I wondered what the (*&^) My distpatcher was thinking when he sent me to this field. Then I had to go down a ramp into a under ground docks (and work around RAIL CARS too!!! &^%$#) turns out to be a complete underground city.

The one thing I distinctly recall is that these underground areas, is that there are no markings and you had better remember how to get out.

I'm not sure if it is by the river, but it is North of Independence. I have been told that the government has cheese and all kinds of food stored down their and the reason being because of the constant temperatures.

Hi Iron horseman , I couldn't tell you, To me everything is by the river down here. I've been to several facilities like this near Kansas City. There is another near Shawnee Ks. West of I-435 & I think it was on Holiday Dr. I used to deliver seafood from Los Angeles Ca. to Kraft foods at this site. Thank you Larry for the info , I've got a name to go by now. & a possible location , It sure sounds like the one I'm looking for , You described it to a T. PS; Yeah when my dispatcher sent me to this location I new something was up just by the way that he talked to me . He gave me a name & address where to go . When I was looking for this place I thought I was lost . I turned into this roadway & thought my dispatcher was of his rocker, Sending me to an abandoned pit. So I scratched my head a little & grumbled a little. So then I went a little further to find a place to turn around, & around the next bend in the road I saw this opening in the stone cliff wall...............Well I'll be a @#$^& a #!*%$*. When I was backed into the dock I had about two hours to wait so I went for a walk , You talk about spookie, Almost like something out of the X Files.

Place had stop lights and the works in it. If I'm not mistaken it was was called Innerspace Storage and it was located off of HWY 271 (North) that headed out to KCI. If it's not that road, you are close to it. The only thing I hated about the place was all that limestone powder that stuck to everything, but as you said the temperture was constant down their and it made it great for storage.

Many years ago I drove truck longhaul & I loaded out of some underground storage facilities, I was wondering if anyone out there knew how to get to the one in Independence Mo. I've been there but was back in the 80s & forgot how to get there. For those who don't know what im talking about , It's an old under ground mine that was converted to an underground storage facility because the temperature stays cool. & it goes back about a half to 1 mile back from the entrance. & has an underground railroad in it also. I was just awe struck when I turned a corner saw those boxcars sitting in there. Reason is , When I go on vacation I want to show the kids & get some modeling ideas for my layout...........................There are a few underground facilities in the area , But am just interested in the Independence Mo. facility.
