CP "transferred" service to STCUM in 1982, but again, they were using CP staff....(although they stopped having ticket agents....and some stations were closed down) however, as soon as it was time to be serviced, all the equipment was repainted, and the CC and F "800" series commuter cars had their restrooms removed (to save on costs of plumbing and direct dumping on the tracks.....but it also put an end to one method of fare evasion) At the same time the Lakeshore Line was "integrated" into the STCUM network, the service to Farnham, Valleyfield, and St. Therese (later to be ressurected as part of the Blainville line) was all terminated. (on the Deux-Montagnes line, the Cartierville branch service was ended when the STCUM took over)
What ended in 1981, was the track beyond Rigaud, as the Canadian no longer ran there (VIA cuts)...however, the ROW between Rigaud and Ottawa is owned by VIA, being safeguarded for a POSSIBLE "High Speed Rail."
Steam on the Lakeshore Line lasted until 1960 or possibly later.....commuter trains were the LAST ones to use steam around Montreal.

On the montreal- Dorion line, I thought CP rail gave that up in the fall of 81

AMT's trains have their crew supplied by the host railroad....either CN or CP. There are no specific "AMT engineers" or "AMT conductors". On the Deux-Montagnes line, even after the service was taken over by the STCUM in 1982 (they had the trains before the AMT was created), the rolling stock on that line was in CN colors...and for a period on the 80's, at many stations on that line, you'd pay an STCUM fare to a VIA Rail employee at a gate, in order to ride on a CN train. In 1995 the old CN stuff (possibly the oldest rolling stock in North America outside a museum) was all retired, and new EMUs were put into service.

You wondered what Central Station was like back when there were steam trains? Well....none of the steam trains went there. It was a "steam exclusion zone".....at several points (including Turcot, Bridge Street, Val-Royale, and Gohier), the steam engine would be detached and an electric would take over. When diesalization happened, catenary over most of the tracks at Central station was removed. They still attached electrics for intercity trains that used the tunnel....but after 1990, that was no longer done. If you want a comparisson, Central Station was once Montreal's equivalent of Grand Central or New York Penn Station.

Being from Montreal, I like the Accuracy...

Never been on a CN-AMT Train, Guess thats because I don't have a CN liscence, d'uh.

But i like the accuracy,

been (walked) through CN's Central Several times myself.
Really big station, can only imagine what it was like in the 50s, when steam still ran...

But good story, I printed it for bedtime reading.
