If they had a guarantee I'd still be with them. Furloughed employees can draw unemployment payments from the railroad retirement board for, I believe, 6 months.
What about CSX conductors? Particularly New Castle,PA to Willard,Ohio extra board and New Castle to Cumberland extra board. Rate?

keep in mind, the garuantees where set up for the protected emplyees (pre 85 agreement people)..im not 100% on how that agreement reads, but eveyone that is on a garuanteeed board is intilted to the garuantee,......but on csx the company can at any time do away with the garuantee..their is no set time limit in any of the contracts for a time limit, many of us new hires have a nasty feeling that after the last of the pre 85 emplyees are gone...or so few of the left that they can hold reulger pool or yard assinments...the garuantees will go with them....and it will be like in the days befor tthem..evey man for himself... if you dont work..you dont get payed...a real blood bath on skaging..some of the old heads that where around in them days could tell you stories of how they where bumbed head out off the extra board becouse someone older then them wanted to work... and if a board got slow, you would find a board that was working... all to keep a paycheck...it was ugly back then, and i dont dought that them days are gone forever... it wouldnt suprise me one bit if they dont stick thier ugly head back into rail roading in the future....i hope im worng..but this biz of rail roading has changed alot over the years..and it will contiune to change...sometimes not for the better for the men....
for all you new hires...... get active in your unions.... vote out the old heads..thier days are about done..you need to get involved in your future.......you are the next generation of the rail road......and KNOW YOUR CONTRACTS AND AGREEMENTS...

the extra board is a list of men that fill in for vacancies of regular jobs. for what ever reason the vacancy might be ( vacation disapline company buisness or if the guy wants a day off) when its time to call a job the call office will call first out on the board. and this man will be paid at the rate this job makes. the best jobs are relief jobs caught off the board. this pays a days pay for about 2-3 hrs of work. the pay will differ depending on where you are. a releif job here would pay around 180 for 3hrs. of work.

Now dont read more into the pay like i said it differs depending on where you are . now the extra board is garuanteed the way it goes is something like this all pay on road jobs are milage and hourly. after 8 hrs it becomes overtime at time and a half. this is due to a basic day of 130 for road jobs road switchers with less than 130 mile and yard jobs at 8 hrs. ( 100 miles) all in a seperate rate. 130 mile or more road thru freight is paid overmiles total milage at a pro rata rate. meaning iff a run is 200 miles subtract this from 130 and it pays 70 over miles. ( the 70 miles at a $1.00 a mile 70 dollars simplifyied) there are many differant pay scales i wont go into but i give you this to finish how this is done. ok now lets say that the garauntee is 2000 dollars. you catch 6 jobs off the board ( this is in a 14 day period) 4 jobs are thru frieght and 2 are yard jobs. thru frieght pays 250.00 one way round trip is 500.00 x4 is 2000.00 the 2 yard jobs payed 175.00 a day or a total of 350.00 total pay for the half is 2350.00 garuantee is 2000.00 you are 350.00 over and hense no garuentee.

lets say you sat around 12 days and then get called to work a thru freight for 500.00 this is all you worked then you take the 2000.00 subtract the 500.00 this leaves a balance of 1500.00 this is what the railroad will pay you to sit and wait by the phone. sounds great dont it paid to do nothing( its not ) after awhile its hard to figure when to go to bed if you and the family can go out to supper together or do anything. this is where a cell phone comes in handy and always take 2 cars anywhere and leave your grip in your car so your ready for work. this is why most say the railroad aint what it seems the hours weekends working missed family functions, you just haft to learn how to be flexable.

An extra board is a list of people qualified to work specific jobs, but who do not hold regular jobs, hence they are "extra" people. The list is called in order, top person first. After work you go to bottom of the list. In old days was all written on a blackboard so every one could check it. That is where the board comes from. When you start on the railroad in a craft job, like brakeman or clerk, you start on the extra board.

This depends upon whether you are on a GUARANTEED Extra Board. Not all boards are guaranteed. ZThe terms of the guarantee are usually set forth in a job posting, depending upon the railroad in question.

Extra Board Question
Posted by jrw249 on Friday, January 30, 2004 2:26 PM
When you are on the extra board I understand that you are guaranteed a weeky pay. Is this pay for 40 hours? Is it at a reduced rate? If you are called for work during the week, is this pay then subtracted from the guaranteed pay? Thanks
