I was out there tonight. It was too dark for my daughter waving at the camera to be among the archived shots, but it was penetratingly cold...we didn't even wait to see the trains we knew were coming. (Daughter's California boyfriend most assuredly thinks I'm nuts now!)

Oh yes, it's cold there... National Weather Service says 4 below with a stiff breeze. But we're not too concerned by the cold temps, as the camera itself is in a heated, weatherproof housing.

Unfortunately, its mounting bracket is not particularly sturdy, and all it takes is a stiff breeze to make it look like it's flapping all over the place. These jiggles cause the server's motion detection system to believe there is a train when there really isn't. When it's windy like this, we adjust the motion detector's sensitivity to help prevent accidental misfires. Alas, that makes it more difficult to reliably capture the head ends of trains.

We'll eventually head to the roof of the pavilion to tighten up the doggone thing. That won't be for a couple months at earliest, so we appreciate your understanding if the recent pictures are less than optimal

I just checked the webcam, and all 18 "recent" shots were from yesterday or this morning. So it seems to be functioning.

But I just looked at the current shot, and I'm fffroooo-zen! It's apparently windy out there, and I'm almost positive it would be colder than the three below we have right now here in Lombard. At least the sun was shining here the last time I checked.

Well, I am in Aurora, which is about 45 miles away (east) of the Rochelle diamonds and it is currently -8F at 8:48 a.m. on Friday, 1/30. Yep, I guess it might be cold enough for even web cams to freeze a bit out there in the open.
