How else? The Wisconsin and southern of course, there the local railroad for me. I didn't care for the fact that they sold there passenger engines though. I also like the WC, they had a neat paint sceam.

The successor to the Rio Grande is the UP and the successor to the New Haven is Amtrak (or Metro North?), but my favorite railroad today is Norfolk Southern. Why? Because they really go after business agressively, live up to their promises as much as possible, including promises to Amtrak, and they are ahead in technical innovation, such as the Triple Crown Service. The also have a great heritage, I liked the Southern with the green and white and gold Pacifics and the great steam on the N&W. I did once ride behind a 4-4-2 on the Wabash between Fort Wayne and Detroit and that was a very fast trip . Dave Klepper

My current favorite is the BNSF (ex CB&Q) West Line. You never know what locos you will see on the front. With BNSF's many paint schemes, foreign lines like NS, CSX,UP,CN, & CPR to name a few, you also have more and more leased locos showing up.. Seems they have a power shortage which explains the variety.

Got to stay alert to every train to see what is on the front end.

My favourite railroad is the Suzie Q because I like the name and I like the colours they use on their locomotives.

BNSF. One reason that really like BNSF is because they still run the warbonnets. Another reason is their engineers wave to me a lot more than the UP engineers.

BNSF because they still run Warbonnets, and they run over Cajon & Raton passes, and over Tehachapi. Their line through the Colombia River Gorge is very scenic.[:)] Also, my grandfather worked for AT&SF.He was a machinist in the La Junta, CO. shops in the teens & early 20s.[:)]
I also like the FEC.They were 20 years ahead of the rest of the industry in work rules and the use of EOT devices.
I also like Arkansas & Misouri Because of their all ALCo roster.[:D]
The KCS is also very interesting, because of it's aggresiveness in going after business.
Ride Amtrak. Cats Rule, Dogs Drool.

Mine is the awesome UP!! I was born at Hinkle yard in eastern Oregon, and have followed their system for more than 50 years. I will visit other areas, check out the "Hot Spots", but my loyalty is Uncle Pete. They utilize more double and triple-track, have the newest and most powerful locomotives, and now have the UPS contract. They have the longest freight haul in North America, and are not too bad about having rail fans around.

Remember that being safe and courteous will bring about invitations to see more. In North Platte, I was invited into the main Locomotive shops, for an up-close and personal tour. I have seen the UP from OR to CA, and from OR through NE to IL and down to TX. What an absolutely AWESOME set of rail lines to behold.
I love the Rails - especially the European Train and Trams (Stadtbahn).

[:D][:D] My favourite current railroad would be the UP. It took over my fourite fallen flag[:p]CNW[:p]. The current colour scheme is pretty amazing with its wings. I also liked that scheme from back in the days of its turbo liner or whatever that train was they used.[:D][8D] They also seem to always have something different on it whenever I get a chance to go watch it.[8D][:I]

florida east coast of course! they have a long history, ran some fine passenger trains(albeit off the ACL), and the story of the building of the key west extension is a tale of just plain gumption and bravado. I take my hat off to henry flagler. and also ed ball, who simply bullied through the union troubles and violence in the '60s to build a first rate railroad with the finest track in the country. I wish florida and amtrak would get going to get the trains back on the FEC.

AMEN! VERY NICELY SAID. I couldn't agree more. Have already heard that the CN will probably put the kabash on most, if not all, of the railfan trips.

I like the Wisconsin Central. Their paint scheme is very nicely similar to the old Soo Line, their roster of lcomotives is interesting and they were accommodating of fan trips. I am also amazed by the number of small town depots still in place along the WC. I will be sorry to see them merged into CN next month. Dave

OK here goes...KCS seems to be able to go about it's business quietly making money without alot of hoopla. They don't melt down, mess up shippers,
etc. They also started operating in the canal zone
using "Southern Belle" colors. The other one that seems to do alright is CN/IC/WC.I think the other boys need lessons.
I like CP's idea of painting their loco's for the roads they took over. I've read they're doing Soo
Milwaukee Road Toronto,Hamilton& Buffalo and they already have done one out east. (D&H)? UP
needs to take notice. They're messin' with the
green Z stripes on the Dash-9's :( BOO..HISS..

The Wisconsin Central is surprisingly busy, between originated traffic and CN haulage. It is fun to see foreign power on this line. During the Mississippi flood, I saw the entire repertoire of BNSF paint. Others include NS, W&LE, and. Wisconsin & Southern. There's a good chance to catch something nearly anytime at Duplainville, just west of Milwaukee, where long passing sidings and a crossing with CP Rail's main Chicago-Minneapolis line provide opportunities.

I would have to agree with the Wisconsin & Southern. I'm a big fan of small town midwest railroading, and here in Southwestern Wisconsin, this is the only active railroad left of a lot of facinating branches. Besides, they do LOTS of special passenger trains in the Madison area.

The Wisconsin & Southern, Because of the beautiful Red and Gray (and sometimes red and silver), color schemes. They have a pair of E8's that pull the Great Circus Train every year from Baraboo Wis. to Milwaukee Wis. It's really beautiful.

Florida East Coast would have to be my favorite railroad. I think that they are a good railroad both from a buisiness and railfan prespective. I I spend alot of time railfannig the FEC.

Thanks for the response. We caught the engine on the way home from Hayward last july. Had just turned off of 63 on to 53 to Eau Claire when the road vanished in a cloud of smoke. Thought at first there was a fire until I caught the headlight coming through the smoke. Barely had time to grab the camera before we were alonside the train!
