UP engines on CSX trains in Maryland

CSX is certainly far from home on those rails...

I have watched some heavy freights roll by with pool power, I have noticed that the foreign road desiels are made to work very hard burning fuel and sparking the rails while the home units kinds of drifts along with just enough voltages to keep wheels at pace with the train. Somebody is paying good money to somebody for the privilidge of wearing out some one else's engines.

Seems like we're spotting these engines all over! I was especially suprised to hear about the CSX engines in Califoria! We do get a lot of auto carriers throgh here. They have the steel sides on them so unlell you get real close you can't see what's in them.

Its just a power exchange when the RR's are to busy to make up another set
I see CSX NS & BNSF on KCS lines every now & then I see NS CSX & ex CR loco's
on UP lines every day just about last night i seen A UP loco on the point of an AMTRAK
the station MGR said the AMTRAK loco had some Electric problems & UP was takin it
toSanantonio where the could switch locos and fix the bad one but You might even see
ex CR locos on BNSF lines as well some time they jump lines to avoid congested rails like UP or maybe there workin on the rails (replacing old Crossties) or something but no new merger down south yet

Hmm. And here I sit looking at a picture of Greenbrier West virginia with a giant UP passenger train in the mid 50's loading passengers.

I would imagine those are run thru power. I find my mainline full of UP, MP, CSX NS et cetc. However I must observe that so far there is not one comment about the CN engines that run far south far from Canada.

At one time the Baltimore and Ohio sent a 2-10-2 S class steam engine on a demonstration run thru central and western US. That engine did very well with the large trains of the day. The folks out west must've muttered the B and WHAT? =)

I read Railpace regularly, and it seems in every issue they print photos of UP and BNSF units in the Northeast.I commonly see NS units and occasionally CSX through Fullerton,Ca.

The other day I saw a double stack train with BNSF dash 9, NS dash 9, NS dash 8 or SD50? (not a wide cab) and NS dash 9 in that order on the train. Minutes later it was an NS dash 9 southbound triple crown. Once in a while we get a CSX dash 9 through here and very rarely, but does happen, we get an ex-Conrail SD70or80or90something in consist.

If I can add to the origional question: do other Class I RRs buy locos for sale from other Class Is? Or do shortlines do this? Or is all run through power? And do Class Is only buy locos from the factory?

I am seeing the same on this side of the island. Seeing a lot of NS and CSX power on intermodel and new auto trains. I work next to UP's double-track mainline that runs from Sacramento (CA) to Oakland via Benecia, a West Coast new vehicle prep facility. I heard that NS and UP had a contract with Ford to carry autos and trucks from coast to coast.

I don't know about what he saw up there, but back just before New Years, there were a pair of UP GEs that look about brand new (even had the Flags on the side) that were pulling mixed freights on CSX in North Carolina. I've seen several UP 70Ms mixed in with CSX power lately. For the first 11 months of 2003, I may saw maybe three UP units on CSX that were still lettered for UP. In December and January I've seen eight, including a couple of all UP consists. These units were pulling either mixed freights or the normal coal drags that come through. They are becoming more and more frequent in these parts. We even had a TFM unit come through last week.

Been seeing a lot of UP and BNSF power coming through Pittsburgh on both CSX and NS. Two weeks ago I saw a west-bound coal train on CSX with all BNSF power (3 units). Today (1/26) I saw a west-bound CSX mixed freight train with a UP switcher (MP1500?) as the 9th unit.

Take a close look at those units TTC and THG -- I've been seeing UP units up here in Philly and in Pavonia yard -- but they were looking worn and tatty -- as if they might be off lease from Uncle Pete and they were filling in for power shortages at NS or CSX.

Their was a while here in Athens, GA that it was hard to tell who owned the tracks. BNSF, UP, and, NS locos were as comman as the CSX.

About the same time I watched a CSX, backed by a UP, and a Santa Fe in original paint doing some switching on the Gainesville Midland.

Dont forget the week we had 5 or so BNSF locos come through. No there haven't been any megamergers, but these sightings have lead to tons of rumors about mergers all over the country, not just in Maryland
