I won't see the issue until Friday, but I know I probably saw a lot of Christmas gifts go flying by over the weekend on the CSX Chicago Line.  I wonder if any of the cars in the car carriers will end up in someone's driveway with a bow...

I thought it was a fun article, but part of me wished there had been a little more covered. I realize that the finite limitations imposed on a periodical like this had a lot to do with it, but I would have liked to see a few more entries. For example:

1) While new locos and comparitively recent models were covered, there was a distinct lack of older stuff. How much does a used GP7/9 go for for instance? Despite their age, there are old Geeps running all over the country.

2) How about an average cost of picking up a branch line that is being spun off by a Class I? I know this would be kind of hard to cover since there are a lot of variables, but it would have been interesting to get a little idea of how much that would cost.

3) Another toughie because of it's complexity, but how about labor costs? How much does an engineer get paid? A mechanic? A MOW worker?

4) What about costs to run the railroad? Do railroads get good deals on Diesel Fuel, Electricity, etc. because of their high rates of usage of such items?

Like I said, it was still a fun article and an enlightening one. I guess I'll have to prowl around the library and the net to find out more.

OK - everyone take out your new Trains magazine and let's make a list of what we want to order from their really great catalogue (Jan Trains Magazine).

So many items, so little money!

I'm still going with the SD70MAC - best in show for me.  Maybe throw in a little rail, a little tie for Driver and one Loram!

Gotta get a bigger calculator.

A great article this month!  Thanx Trains.
