Unless the Police hear you honk the horn and happen to have a decibel meter in there trunk chances are it wont hold up in court Wink [;)]

According to the Montgomery County, MD noise ordinance a police officer may cite anybody who creates a noise disturbance (for example sounding a loud blast on a locomotive air horn on a car) using the legal definition of a noise disturbance in the ordinance alone without using a noise meter. As far as I know citations on the basis of noise disturbances alone have stood up in court.

It's interesting to note that no one has pointed out the obvious - light one of those things off at too close a range and you can permanently damage someone's hearing.  When I'm railfanning I always keep hearing protection handy.  The minute I see the approaching headlight I put on the protection and don't take it off until the train has passed by.

Exactually what I was thinking, or maybe some comedian thinks it would be funny to do it to someone on a busy street and then causes a wreck. That would be enough to make a fella grab his 44 LOL.

PA / Horn = okay as long as your able to use it the right way be mature and not goof around you shouldnt get in any trouble

Siren = not ok, its illegal no matter what unless your Law Enforcment or Fire/EMS. If you have a Airhorn/PA and you get pulled over and teh cop knows (my radio gear is in plain view in my center console) alot of times they will ask if it also has a siren and check My 2 cents [2c]

Every state I have lived in, using a siren on your personal vehicle will get you in legal trouble, "responsible" or not, and that's included most areas with volunteer firefighters, who could use only a rotating beacon light.

I live out in the country so PA's are the least of worries now that huntung season has started for the local cops.  Whoever I know that has recently put in one I give them the rundown of do's and dont's, but using it is up to them.  My PA is rated at 10watts and have it rigged to where it gets out to a 50 yard range.  If used with responsibility PA, horn, or siren, should be legal.  And if the kids getting off the school bus refuse to move with the horn, tell them to move on the PA and watch them scatter.  I think if used with responsibility on good intentions, legal or not, a police officer will let it go.  Correct me if Im wrong.

I believe it's illegal in Alabama- something about using a warning signal device for a use other than it's original intent.  The traffic citation also covers illegal use of sirens and lights, too.

Local regulations notwithstanding - they're likely legal, as long as you don't use them improperly (harassment is harassment whether you use a PA or not).  Noise ordinances might apply as well.  I'd bet the amp power isn't any more than 5 watts.  In comparison, most emergency vehicle PA's are 100 watts...

Now what is the legality of a PA horn stuck up under the hood attached to a CB.  A bunch of my friends have one, including me, and some are LOUD.  We arent those jerks yall were talking about, we rarely use the PA and when we do it is usually just us on private property.

In the case of that SP horn I'd say at least 10 db...Wink [;)]

The OPD had a little 'crackdown' on musical/non OEM horns a couple of years back after some HS kids created their own siren and pulled people over.  It must have been funny...until they pulled over an unmarked cruiser.  One is still in jail.

Dealing with some of the distracted cellphone bla-blaing complete retarded morons behind the wheels I have to deal with here, I have considered popping an airhorn like one of these under my cars hood. I hate to say it but there is a sizable percentage of drivers out there who just dont give a Shock [:O] when it comes to courtious, or hell, even safe driving, its for these complete nincompoop bozos in their a$$master SUVs that I would love to that final option of firing off a high decible freight train notice of contempt at them. I just really dont think anything else short of a bullet hitting their rear view mirror would be capable of registering thru the lump of concrete they use for skulls that they have done something idiotic while driving.

   Have fun with your trains

The deisel air horn in Gene's truck was illegal under California law.  He got it from a guy we knew who worked for the SP.  I do not know what the decibal rating was, but you could hear it for miles.

A few years ago, when the UP did there steam excursion that came through Elmhurst, and the Western Suburbs, there was a guy who had those horns mounted on his pickup, and he went down the street where everyone had gathered to shoot photos, blowing his stupid horn.

He was obnoxious about the whole thing...

I believe the horns can be outlawed, but, I think it is up to each municipality, depending on their noise ordinances.

I dunno - some of those expensive little cars seem to have some pretty chintzy horns.

I still have the electronic siren in my truck (from my tenure as a fire chief) - but only the airhorn part is currently hooked up.  It gets used more for saying "Hi" than anything else, and that's not too often.

I was with my family in Denver over Thanksgiving visiting my sister and brother in law.  We ended up visiting the local mall, and it took a long time to find a parking spot.   Needless to say not everyone was happy, including a gentleman driving a 1980's Porsche.  He proceeded to blow an air horn an hold it out the side of his window several times.  There was a car blocking him from getting into another lane in the parking lot.  I don't think my brother in law, and dad and me have ever laughed that hard.  We actually saw him in the department store and my brother in law started chatting away with him like he does with everyone. Of course he wanted to know about the Porsche and we learned all about it.  It turns out his horn worked perfectly fine, but he thought people wouldn't respond to the regular horn.  He even got out of his car with his air horn, right before the blocking car moved.  I was wondering how close he would get to the car before he would blow the air horn.  Laugh [(-D]
