At the time that I posted this last night details were not clear. It turns out that 28 cars came of the tracks, not 41. The railroad still doesn't know what caused the accident, because the fire made it almost impossible to do any investigating.

I should say very lucky for the people who I'm happy for. But bad for the poor cars that now are pretty much wasted.

At around 3:30 PM Today a BNSF coal train derailed near in Plattsmouth Nebraska. Plattsmouth is just south of Omaha. 28 of the 128 cars jumped the tracks.

Several of the cars landed on top of a trailer home. Three small children and the parents escaped without being harmed. The cars hit a propane tank near the house, engulfing it in flames. Surprisingly, Nobody was injured.

BNSF has not yet been able to determine the cause of the derailment. I think that it is simply amazing that those girls and their parents escaped without harm! I have actually train-watched quite near to where the train derailed. It's very surprising that a derailment of that magnitude didn't injure a single person.
