....Witnessed one engine [Union Pacific], six axle pulling 38 cars through Muncie today headed north on NS....Some loaded.

Ive seen 1 engine intermodals before on csx being pulled by leased cp wc bnsf and up power before.

....This one was carrying various kinds of merchandise...grain cars, auto carriers, lumber cars, box cars and of course a misc. of box cars. I was kind of surprised they were using just one engine. Grades are moderate in this part of the country but down farther south I imagine they meet heavier grades.

How about one GP39-2 with 52 cars about 1/2 loads at 125 tons plus weight of car (tare). Making about 4 MPH.

Amazing how much locomotives will pull. SW type switchers will pull over 100 cars if you bleed the brakes off during flat switching... GP38s will too...

....Even most Triple Crown trains running through here are being hosted by two rather sizeable engines on the same line.

last night I saw a 55T headed your way with a single SD60 pulling 120 grain cars, which looked to mostly empties. It only had to go as far as Muncie because the crew said 55 of them were going to Redkey.

...2-8-2: I would imagine heading south means slightly less grades too....and if 55 were going to Redkey that would mean the rest of them had other distinations and the load would be lighter the rest of the way. That route coming down from the north [NS[ has a decent amount of traffic.

I once saw one UP SD40-2 pull a 105 car train north out of Bakersfield.
