Ed's comments on signal positions reminds me of the set-up for the northbound signal to the CSX Blue Island Sub at Blue Island Junction. The signal is placed north of the bridge over the Cal-Sag Channel and is almost impossible to see until the lead unit crosses Broadway, about two blocks away.
One phone call later...
One of our jobs was running light motors from North Yard to the Katy neck to wye the power...had the long hoods forward.
Came around a curve and found a train which had not cleared the main....not sure which crew missed which signal yet.
Heading south on our main, you are running through a hard curve there...the signals at the south end are not staggered, all three are even with each other...the signal protecting the main is easily confused with the one protecting the entrance to Booth yard...it isn't until you are facing them head on that you can tell which signal is yours, and by then, you only have a few car lengths left.
Well, somebody is going to be off for Christmas.

That is at the south end of Booth Yard, where Booth siding and our main line meet...it is CTC, and you work on signal indication through there...will find out who goofed up and let you know.
