The MBTA has their locomotive shop on the North Side, near North Station, so locomotives in need of major repairs also use that route to get from the North Side to the South Side.

I occasionally see a CSX geep and some reefers in Everett, and as far as I know, they get there via the "rat run". And I'm pretty sure Amtrak uses the same ROW to move downeaster equipment from south to north station.

I mean the connection between CSX's Beacon Park Yard and -I believe- just West of North Station.

If you're referring to the Grand Jct as the "Rat Run" (a moniker i've never heard used for the place), the line is still alive and kickin'.

I heard this somewhere, that trains don't run past the Mass. Ave crossing, but I'm not sure if it's fact or just a rumer.

Also, the circus train's there right now, for those Boston railfans.
