I agree that this belongs on the toy train forum ... but I cannot resist pointing out that the "value" placed on old toy trains often has little to do with what you can actually buy them for. Not too many years ago I bought a complete marx train set, steam engine, tender, some cars and a caboose (the old painted tin cars), circle of track and a rather poor transformer -- rummage sale. Price: $1. About that some time I bought a Lionel train set, steam engine (with chug chug sound tender) some cars, track, transformer, etc for $15. Alas in neither case did the original box come with the set.
I suspect the expert valuation of both sets at the time was considerably more than I paid for it -- but knowing value is one thing and actually getting that price can be another.

Howdy maam
welcome to the forums.First I think you might have a marx train.I would check classic toy trains on this site from Kalmbach or I would go to greenburg and look for trains. they do auctions of trains and toys.
hope this helps

??Antique Trains??
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, January 3, 2004 9:55 PM
I have been searching all over the internet for antique train information. What i need exactly is an appraisal on a train i have. The train is made by MAR toys. It says Rock Island 99 on the engine and Rock Island 17858 on the side of the Cabooos. I know for a fact that it was made prior to 1965-66. If anyone can help me or give me a site to some information on whats this train is worth i would appriciate it. Thank You. [:)]
