One big mistake that we have made in this country for years is that there are two different types pf railroad lines. Passanger and freight
Just cause a line make a good freight corrider does not mean it will make a good passanger corrider. The opposite also works. Too, passanger trains need to be isolated from freight trians so that they can move faster without interuption.
There have been plenty of lines that have been abandoned by the freight carriers that should have been taken over by Amtrack and used as passanger only lines. And yes they need to be carrying mail box cars on the rear and tell the freight carriers to get lost and stop complaining about the silly competition. They just can not got from end to end of the country in 24-36 hours. Like I said, people only have so much patience.

I can certainly agree with that this summer.. CP rail is changing the ties on our local Railroad going and coming from Montreal. This is all but a disaster. 1 of the 2 tracks are closed, so all trains must merge to one track, that resuslts in hour long red signals.. and massive passenger/freight train delays.

ture about the splitting the rail systems up..but i dont agree with the freight deals... let someone come to your job sight and take work off of you...i want to see how much you like it... the freight lines have enought compitition from trucks as it is... what ever traffic we can get should be ours... and the mail is no differnt... even with the higher speeds of amtrak trains, they are always running late as it is... put the mail an a freight train, and it might thier there faster....

Passenger trains only run slowly because freight railroads won't let them run fast due to congestion from freight trains, poor track conditions and insufficient or short sidings. Fast is of course a relative term so I would be careful calling any freight train fast or most passenger trains in north america fast either.

The fra is the one who regulates amtrack speed not the freight roads . and trucking doesnt give the railroad compotition its the other way around. go to any decent trucking company and they will tell you they cant compete with the railroad. if they could why do you think intermodel has grown, why is ups putting its trailers on trains. J.B.Hunt one of the biggest cut throat operations in trucking uses rail continously. the fact is there is plenty of work out there for both its who wants it the most is what counts.
