Where Is It?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, March 6, 2005 2:30 AM
Mostly there is nothing new under the sun. And this is nothing new, the "Where Is It' was first noticed by me on TrainOrders.com. I enjoyed it...

So placed here on the Trains Forums is a "Where Is It." Can anyone place this photo?

Well, if there was to be a winner here, I'd hope it would be you eric, we both share an interest in the Espee. Right state, wrong city though.

Thanks for playing the game!

....I like the clear blue sky and it's been established to be NV and I can't take it any farther than that but that engine looks like it is used there stationary as a power unit...?? Rails don't look like anything runs on them....all rusty on top...and a mess of oil on the ground....Can't figure the other small enclosure's purpose.

Hint: think Western Pacific, and it is here in Northern Nevada.

We have a winner! Chad, yes the photo was taken on the Reno branch at the former Western Pacific Parr Yard. This after the merger of the UP and SP, but before UP's Reno local was moved to Sparks.

I was wondering why the SP unit but if it was taken after the merger I guess it's really a UP unit. I wasn't shure Parr was the name of the yard or I would have mentioned it.

Does UP use the old WP branch at all these days? I remember for a while there were long strings of autoracks on the north end but now there gone.

And while I'm at it..
What are UPs current operations out to Fallon, and down the Mina branch? Do they still go all the way to Thorne ? and how often if so ? What other industry is on that line? If I remember right wasn't there a plastics outfit and someplace that received coal?

Chad,

I haven't been north of Reno for some time, as I understand it the cars are still gone from the north end of the Reno branch. There was a red flag at Bordertown the last time I was out that way. The Reno branch from the junction at the "Overland Route" in downtown Reno to the Leareno industrial lead at Stead is used everyday but Sunday. The Reno local is called out of Sparks Monday through Saturday at 9:00 AM - however it can run late, I've seen it leave Sparks as late as 12:00 noon.

The other two locals calling Sparks home is the Lovelock Turn and the Wabuska local. The Lovelock Turn is called at 7:00 AM at Sparks Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It travels to Lovelock and then back to Hazen and a trip out to Fallon. Here it spends the night and returns to Sparks from Fallon on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The Wabuska Local is a 6 day a week job, Monday through Saturday, not sure of its start time, maybe around 8:00 AM, I've seen it leave Sparks as late as 11:00 AM. It only runs to Wabuska as needed. If there is to be a job to Thorne its called as an extra. I haven't been to Wabuska for a number of years.

The BNSF Fernley local is called out of Sparks 5 to 6 days a week, but not on Sunday, at 9:00 AM. The units are parked down in the 800 - 900 block of East Glendale by the new wye by Summit Racing.

Hope this answers some of your questions. If you ever get up this way let me know, would enjoy showing you around.

I'm not absolutely sure but did SP 7626 eventually turn up on IHB?
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

I doubt it, UP seems to be keeping the GP40-2s. I know it was still SP 7626 and in Missouri on 09/02/02.

I think SP 7626 has been renumbered to UP 1382.
