Annoying Pop-Ups
Posted by Fred M Cain on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 1:23 PM

Is anyone besides me getting irritating pop-ups from advertisers on this forum?

If so, I don't understand this.  This is not a "free" forum.  Don't we help pay for this through our subscription to TRAINS Magazine?

So, what the heck is with all the advertisements?

Regards,

Fred M. Cain

I loaded up a 'hosts' file that blocks most of the ads.

No chance of bringing in malware like you might if you put in an ad blocker.

Haven't seen an ad here since.

Not sure why this complaint surfaces so often.

- modern browsers have more sensible defaults, finally. I use Firefox which now has 'Enhanced Tracking Protection' which seems to help, although it sometimes interferes with certain web site function (like one of my banks).

- ad-blockers like Ublock Origin have become really effective. I rarely see pop-ups but quite a few sites detect the ad blocker and demand that I turn it off.

In order to help, hearing details of your browser would be appreciated ....

BTW I have UO turned off on this site, no issues mate.
