jeffhergertI think the FRA requires the check ride. It can, and has been done, using the simulators. IMO, that shouldn't be allowed. The simulators are far removed from the real world in many instances.
SImulators and remote downloads. Way of the future - today!
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.

Now, that design provides excellent ventilation!
I know some people who would love to have that in their basement, and one who actually did (similar, anyhow). He also wired up a full sized AAR stand so it could be used to operate the various train sim programs. Quite the thing.

It's been done all right!
This goes waaay back, but around 1990 or 1991 (or so) Model Railroader had an article about a guy with the cab of an F-unit in his basement! Comprising the area from the seats forward, and the complete "bulldog" nose, he'd set it up to be the control center for his model railroad. Transformers, switch controls, light switches, they were all in there. Cool!
Maybe if someone on the Model Railroader staff looks in on this forum they can link us the article?
Lord, that guy must have a basement with a lot higher ceiling than mine!
If I remember the pictures right, his basement was HUGE!
IIRC, this fellow had a GE or Geep front end.
I never got a chance to see the set-up, and he lives in the south now, having followed a job.
He shipped his AAR stand back north for a railroad anniversary celebration and set it up so the public could run it. I brought my big-screen TV in so there would be a nice, big display instead of a puny computer monitor.
