What did the guy running next to the boxcar at about the 15 second mark think he was going to accomplish? It made me think of the scene in movies when the bad guy steals the good guy's car. The good guy chases the car on foot, waving his fist and yelling "come back here!"
Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
Probably trying to see if he could jump up and sting a handbrake on.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any
A CN conductor was killed last year in Melville, SK trying to do that. She was on the leading end of the car when the collision happened.

Maybe an instinctive reflex triggered by a shot of adrenaline? I'm thinking the guy in that video was lucky nothing fell on him.
My old car was on a wrecker last August, and when the wrecker stopped at a stop sign, it came loose and hit the front bulkhead on the truck bed. Not realizing that the front had also come unhooked, the driver started raising the bed to move the car back. When it rolled back and fell onto the street, he said he put his hand out trying to stop it.

Operating failure by the wrecker driver in not securing the car to the truck bed. If you want to see professionalism in the towing, vehicle recovery business watch the Ron Pratt videos who operates Midwest Truck in SE Missouri.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!
I'll bet those railfans videotaping the yard action knew exactly how those bored 1937 newsreel cameramen felt when their routine "Hindenburg" arrival assignment turned into anything but!
Without the horror of course. Thank God.
But for pure surprised railfan reaction to an unexpected event you can't beat THIS...

My theory is that employee was running away from the collision point and knew not to cross the other tracks. So much for the safety shed!
Look VERY closely at the center of the view at 0:35 to 0:38. The side of the truck frame is bouncing over the axle/wheels that have turned sideways. Somehow that looks FAKE. The left end of the truck seems to have been airbrushed out or lost in the blending of two different videos.

Not fake!
Note the crease that gets put into the hi-cube box before rolls towards its derailing position, ann the while the the cars the caused the incident are rolling in the opposite direction off their trucks which continue moving in their direction of travel.
Classic sideswipe derailment.
Not exactly what I would call a "massive derailment".
