One of the most heartening things noted in the July edition excellent article on SEPTA PTC was the fact that SEPTA's PTC system is self contained and not connected to the internet. This renders it immune from hackers. SEPTA is to be congratulated not only on its intelligent and timely implementation of PTC but moreover on this brilliant move. We as a nation are rightly preoccupied with infrastructure hacking vulnerablilty. Perhaps more industries should take a page from SEPTA's book.
I just got the magazine and haven't read the article yet, but there's enough information in the post for me to comment.
SEPTA has the advantage of a geographically small footprint. Laying in dedicated wire or fiber to provide necessary connectivity would not be as expensive as the expansive systems the Class 1's are dealing with. In in some cases, the fiber or copper may already be available.
Of course, the code lines of old are mostly gone, not that they had the bandwidth to provide the necessary comms.

If I were going to pursue information on Septa or the PTC I would contact the East Penn Traction Club. It is a Philadelphia based group of trolley and subway modelers and historians. They do have a web page so it should be fairly simple

A self-contained system is practicable only if you don't need to exchange data with the rest of the world or your in-house network is geographically compact. Most large businesses don't meet either of those criteria.
