Just saw this online. A reminder of how dangerous the railroad is. Sympathy to the family of the victim. Does anyone have more details?
Brewster police were at the scene Sunday night of what was said to be a fatal accident at the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway yard.
BREWSTER Village police were investigating a fatal accident Sunday night involving a train at the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway yard.
A Stark County coroner investigator and police officers were at the scene late Sunday evening, so no details were available at the time. A dispatcher for the village Police Department said the victim was believed to be an employee of Wheeling & Lake Erie.
Larry Thomas, rest in peace. Stephanie, I'm very sorry. Young Thomases, always be proud of your Dad.
A 20 year old Trainman lost a hand on my Watch opening the knuckle after he gave the Back Up to the head end by radio. T'was fifty miles away, but the radio call came thru on Channel 1.
Another man was sliced and diced at the local Kraft Pulp Mill switching with a Trackmobile, and they called down by dial phone to hold any trains that may be coming in with etys.
Apparently he was run over 3 times before they missed him, and the following Monday they had to send the Police out to pick up one of his hands.
I informed Higher Management by dial phone ( a Long Distance call for the Bean Counters ) and they asked 'Was he one of OURS?' as the CYOA era had begun.
Anyone who has switched with flats or tanks knows well the dangers inherent, esp at night, sleet and rain.
Poor guy. Poor family.
Thank You.
On this forum we squabble and fight about some of the dumbest stuff. But tragedies like this remind us that railroading is, at its heart, a very dangerous job where one misstep can kill you. And I don't think there's a railroader alive that hasn't had a close call. Only takes one second of distraction, or one false step and its all over.
RIP brother.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any
Well said.
