There's a note saying "file under ..... train wreck". This could lead a casual observer to conclude that some blame attaches to the train, but I don't see how the train could cause the truck's landing gear to snag the rail. Doesn't look like the train wrecked. Looks like the truck wrecked. If the trucker was worried about being over the weight limit before this happened, I think he can relax now.
Hope the injured recover, and the guilty party learns a lesson.

Getting back to this. I hate crossings near intersections. Sometimes I wonder if it would be that much of a pain (expense) to erect two additional gate mechanisms that are normally lowered perpendicular across the tracks. That would hopefully steer people around the tracks and not onto them (use another color for them, perhaps? Yellow and black?). Then when the train comes, the road gates would lower and the gates across the tracks would raise. Has to be cheaper than redesgining a whole intersection. Yes, it would require a little maintenance.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.

Personal observation - Local Highway authorities have a big tendency to make suspect highway road crossings at grade worse when they 'improve' the highways, especially highways that parallel the railroad. When ground is needed to widen the parallel highway it is invariably taken from the railroad side of the available property, thus shortening the distance between the two, but still retaining the traffic light for the street crossing the railroad - leaving no 'safe' ground between the railroad and the stopping point for the parallel highway.

Methinks that many folks view the gates as immovable objects, even though they are designed to give/break away. They also don't want to scratch up their Rolls-Kanardly.
On the other hand, folks who want to get through a crossing after the gates are down never seem to have a problem getting around the gates...

DeggestySolution? Put a light facing the oncoming traffic on the far side of the railroad to inform all traffic about to cross the track that it should stop without blocking the railroad?
Or, just put the traffic signal on the "other" side of the tracks and make traffic stop there. I've seen more than a few non-railroad intersections where the stop line is well back from where you'd expect it to be.
Like this traffic light in Corry, Pa. (Old railroad town. Traffic light is before the first set of tracks, then you cross the second set before you reach the intersection.)

Rick, you must be crazy! The Corry scheme makes entirely too much sense to be widely adopted. Actually, I can imagine a lot of people being impatient & not understanding the reason they are being held back. How well is this working?
Yeah, I know... Impractical because it makes sense.
Actually, every time I am around that area, it works out pretty good. Trouble is, track side takes longer to clear, so they had to delay the other (Main st) lights, and post signs that state "opposing traffic has extended green". (It really is the same amount of time, but sit's so far back, it appears longer to those going other directions.)
They even tied them into the crossing signals. When the gates drop, Center st goes red, Main Street gets green, but a lightup sign reads "Train Approaching. No turns." and has a no turn permitted symbol. Track side of the light has a sign that says only "Train Approaching". All four have no turn on red signs.
Fortunately for vehicular traffic (and unfortunately for railfans) there is little rail traffic on one line, (B&P Erie-Warren line, one train each way Monday-Friday) almost none on the other (WNY&P Meadville line, very infrequent, possibly 2-3 times each month) anymore. It was fun when NS ran coal drags through there though.

According to the article it appears that the officer was responding to a collision. Often people are advised not to move their vehicles in that situation as to avoid disturbing evidence if they are not in the way of any major traffic.
The officer thus had to direct traffic around the incident. He apparently motioned the truck to cross the track without heeding the crossing protection as the truck seems to cross after the gates began to come down. The truck driver didn't go through the gate in time to avoid being hit.
Wow. Just goes to show that all accidents are the result of a chain of factors.

Rule #1 for all emergency responders: If you are on or near the tracks, call the railroad! They had clearly been on the scene long enough for such a call to make a difference. And, Heaven forbid, should I ever find myself in that position the gates are going to move quickly. I know they will move, but even if I didn't I'd make them that way in a hurry.

Well it happened here in our town. A tractor trailer on state 100 slid down the street, took out the crossing gate, and collided with the second loco of a freight train. Just found out about it but have no details. CSX estimate of $125,000 in damages to loco. Driver not injured. But if he had been 15 seconds sooner ? ? ?
Driver cited for not having brakes in proper adjustment and many other violations. Understand a lien already filed by CSX.
