RED MEANS STOP right?

when I was a signalman on British Railways in the 1960's, a red signal meant STOP- <br />no ifs or buts, passing that signal without permission could mean suspension(if reported)but some manual sigalboxes(towers) had no electronic detectors and things in the backwoods(branch lines) were kept away from our admin
