Looking back on 2018

Passengers boarding a RTA streetcars in New Orleans was one of my favorite images of 2018. Photo by Justin Franz.
If you’re a regular reader of Trains News Wire, you’ll note that this week we’ve been listing some of the top 10 stories of 2018. I had a hand in writing one of those stories, one of the many “year in review” pieces I’ve been working on for Trains and for the newspaper I work for here in Montana.

These annual look backs are popular for a number of reasons, although the primary one is that the last few weeks of the year are some of the slowest when it comes to news (I should know, I’ve spent most of my week leaving messages for public officials who have already left their offices for the year).

However, it’s also just human nature to use the changing of a calendar as an excuse to look back at the experiences one has had over the last 12 months. For the last couple of years, I’ve put together an album of my favorite railroad images that I have taken; a collection of snapshots of the places I’ve been fortunate enough to visit.

This year’s album features images from the wilds of British Columbia to the streets of New Orleans. It’s a reminder of what I love so much about the hobby of railroad photography. Sure, capturing images is the stated objective, but the ultimate goal, for me anyway, is to venture to places I’ve never been before or to try and experience familiar places in a new light. I’m sure it’s the same for many of you.

When I look at my favorite images from the last 12 months, I think back on the many miles traveled with friends and ponder what the next year will look like.

What are some ways that you look back at your year in railroad photography?

Before I sign off for the year, I just want to thank each and every person who reads this blog — I truly appreciate it. Happy Holidays from my family to yours. See you trackside in 2019 - JAF
