Spencer, N.C. May 28, 2015.

Norfolk Southern has done it again....they have added yet another special scheme to their growing number of uniquely painted locomotives. This time is in the form of SD60E #911 painted up in a special livery to honor the sacrifices and service and of America's first responders; fire, police and emergency medical services. Almost immediately after the freshly painted loco was out-shopped it was already being displayed with fire engines and police cruisers as a once in a lifetime unique photo opportunity for those departments and responders.

As a twenty nine year veteran of the fire service it really means something special for a Class 1 railroad company to devote the commitment to honor such humble and deserving professions. The numbering of the unit to 9-1-1 not only recognizes the obvious reference to the 9/11 terror attacks but also the universal emergency number in use around the US. The paint scheme is a mix of NS and also has a hint of the fire engines of FDNY. Undoubtedly, the NS crews that run this unit into the future will get countless waves and recognition from not only the public but the folks who put their lives on the line every day for the protection of others.

Norfolk Southern has set the tone for other railroads to follow, not only honoring its predecessor railroads but also in recognizing military veterans. The acknowledgement of the sacrifice and service out nations first responders is one that Norfolk Southern should be proud to show off. I only hope, that this unit will work its way out west so we can attempt a "photo op" of this special unit with one of our fire engines.
