Got the foot doc appointment out of the way then went to the pharmacy and got refills on prescriptions. I then went to Wal-Mart to get a quart of flat latex paint mixed in the same color blue as the backdrop so I'll have plenty for painting over the blue area later. I'm gonna be making clouds within the next couple weeks and I'l most likely make some mistakes I'l want to be covering up.

Jim: Nope, I doubt i'll be done before the next snow flies. If you get a cahnce, read this month's RMC, there's an article on an N scale plow using a Tichy piece. A typo made it sound like he could also do this in HO, and I got excited. I think dad and I will cannibalize a pair of Athearn BB rotaries.
nik.n: Hmm, a rotary body would make a good crew car. Sounds like it would work, And remember, your talking to the guy who thought about putting russel plows on the fronts of F units to work as bows of a ship; engines to wade into floods and haul cars out. I'm also the guy who was planning a water train to drain some water out of floods, where ecologically safe to do so, nd haul it back for storage, possibly to fight forest fires in water-deprived areas.

Nittany, welcome to the wonderful world of 'modular-engineering'... As for whatever is needed, I'd just say build what works to hold the building together, and let the engineers call it what they want afterward.
TeenSteam - maybe Ulrich might be able to give you some info on 'across-the-pond' steam. I think there are other Diners familiar with British steam (DerJohn and others), but DerJohn and Ulrich (Ulrich) are in more often than our few British/English/Scottish/Welsh Diners, who haven't stopped by to visit recently.
Jeff, yeah, I'll have to watch Mr. Murphy extra close when I start on my backdrops. Thanks for my reminder (unfortunately, at your expense). I guess by now, it wouldn't be workable to make the background section (the one you hadn't put up) match the one you have glued up, would it? Just hoping for ya... The photos you posted look great - not entirely sure where the background starts (or the background trees begin, if you have any there).

Oh yeah, backdrops - and in the process of looking at related sites, I found another one I'd gone to in the past which was also good. Now, if they'd put some of those in the Walthers sale flyers... That was pretty unbelieveable that the woman's car stayed up there. Somebody should've suggested to the police that she probably went straight home to change her britches...
Ulrich, I actually very rarely eat pork - has probably been quite a few months (and think that was in a BBQ sandwich). My ex-in-laws (when they were living and had their farm way south of here) raised pigs, and I never was too fond of when the wind blew from their barn to the house (instead of the other way)... Pork always has tasted kinda 'greasy' to me... Sorry to hear that Barry and crew are 'sharing the weather' with you. At least for a good t-boomer, you should get a temp (and humidity) drop on the backside of the front!

As I recall, your son farms also, yes? Gotta get that boy (and a few more) trained up and grown before your son reaches retirement age - or maybe you want the grandson grown now, to help you out? (He is almost big enough...) Good to hear you and Mary Ann are staying healthy.
Not a lot of MRR'ing today - well, not directly. It's payday [YAY!!], so I went by the credit union and transferred money from savings to checking, then withdrew from there. Paid two bills off, drove by the pharmacy and got refills of my two eye drops - and stopped by the sorta LHS (the R/C one I mentioned previously) and got some 5-minute epoxy (for finishing up my trailer kits and the trailer park office kit) and some German batteries that he was touting as as good as Duracells, but only 40 cents each. I figured I can try them out in my camera and see how long they last. If they're any good, he has a good stock of them.
I'd made a tentative list of what I need to do for the layout (so I can tighten up the track and its fittings/gauge/etc.), and what stuff I'll need to find places to move stuff to... I plan on maybe moving some of the stuff off the layout starting tonight. Getting antsy to make more progress on my layout, after seeing everybody's progress and pics in here. I also decided to just remake my Athearn SP 50' single door 'DF' boxcar, which I'd determined (as is) was too late for my RR's era. Think I'll just repaint it for CAW markings, maybe do a patch job over the SP stuff (and the barcode marks...). Might put together another of my Bowser covered hoppers also. We'll see.
Good to hear from some of our MIA Diners. Prayers continue for those travelling (like Jerry and Sallie, and I think Garry and Shelley may already be on the way to the 90th birthday shindig for Mom)(probably include Fergie in this, even if his ship's not actually travelling until those parts arrive), for those needing healing (including my sniffles - mercifully the headache and slight fever are gone from yesterday morning) and comfort. Hope that chapel car got moved along with the Diner. Oh, yeah - and prayers for more moderate weather!

Afternoon all from Sunny(still)Cal. About 93 today with a low off of the Alaskan coast that's promising to move down here by tomorrow or Sunday and bring--showers. Not cold ones, it's one of those 'Lows' that's supposed to dip down, suck up the Tropical moisture around Baja California and bring it up here. Which means thunderstorms in the mountains and humid warm rain up here.
Needless to say, both Spooky and Uff-Dah, who are busily working on their Winter Coats, are not amused. I am getting very baleful looks from my big Viking. I think he's pining for the Fjords, LOL!
Jeff: I LIKE that backdrop. It's from Busch, right? I was looking at their 'mountain' backdrop, but it's mainly Swiss Alps, a little too 'jagged' for my Sierra Nevada. But, what the hey, nobody'd probably notice, anyway, LOL. But yours is just NEAT!!
Fergie: So good to hear from you, buddy. I was beginning to think you'd gotten stuck on an ice floe or something. And yes, you're right, 2-10-2's and 2-10-4's for some strange reason require larger radii than some 4-8-8-4's. Go figure. I hope you can find a tender for the 2-10-4.

Well, got all of the Code 83 Peco turnouts laid in the Deer Creek yard. No problem. Lifted out all of the yard trackage very easily, installed the turnouts and--BAM! The yard tracks are suddenly too LONG! Track clipper time. Either that or have about 4" of yard track buried in the forest, LOL! I'll do it 'tomorrah,' as Scarlett says in Gone With The Wind. Funny, the Peco looked the same length as the Walthers Code 83 that I replaced. And no, nothing against the Walthers--but when you're running big, heavy brass locos over them all the time, those Walthers/Sinohara contacts eventually seem to say, "HELP!" At least mine did.
Last weekend of 'freedom', we start up Monday at the school with a Faculty Retreat. Catholic School, remember--we have to sorta/kinda get our spiritual side in order before the kids re-invade on Thursday. Actually, it's a good 'centering' exercise for us. Retreat Monday, then orientation for the students on Tuesday and Wednesday, then we jump into the trenches Thursday with the first day of instruction.
Met the new Principal today--Leah and I were in the office going over the repertoire for this year, and she walked in. This is a first for Jesuit--a female Principal. Up to now, the high school has always had a Jesuit Priest as a Principal, but this woman has come very highly recommended. She seems quite nice, and when Leah introduced her to me, she smiled and said, "You're 'Doc.' I've heard great things about you. Glad to have you back." and gave me a VERY firm handshake. Need I say that I found her VERY attractive, LOL? It should be a very interesting year. Leah said that the Faculty is pretty darned impressed with her.
Well, the temperature's starting to drop a little, so time to go out into the garage and start 'clipping' those yard tracks. That still confuses me a little. Oh well--

Lucky I posted those photos last night of old LV #211. That way the diner could be moved today in style. I'm sure the old girl had no problem moving the diner, the refrigerator car, and the Chapel Car. After all that EMD 567B that got put in her a few years ago still has some real moving power left in her!
Just got a phone call from the lady who is the Program Director for Camp Onseyawa (Rotary Handicapped Camp in this area). She said that they have canceled the second week of the camp due to the Flu making an untimely appearance out there and going through the camp like wildfire. So, now that I have spent ???? Hours getting everything put together, and most everything loaded into the truck. I at least have it all ready to do Railroading Merit Badge for the Scouts.....

there I was, at the diner´s old spot, with a two-weeks supply of fresh homemade strudel, ready to unload it and - the diner was gone! Took me a while to find the new track....

The weather is back to normal, i.e. nightly temperatures of not more than 12 C and a lot of rain. You could literally hear the earth slurping up the liquid. The soil is quite sandy over here, so it does not store water very well.
Janie, I´ll sit on the bench outside to watch the beautiful sunrise we are having!
Team Steam Fan - if you are into British outline modeling, don´t forget that OO scale is about 10 % larger than HO scale (1/76 vs. 1/87), i.e. the structures, cars and figures need to be 10% larger than your regular HO accessories!

Good morning.It's 74 and clear. The high will be in the low 90's and it will be partly cloudy.Went to see the foot doc yesterday. There's been no real progress on the healing of the wounds. I'm going back on the 31st to get the paperwork for the upcoming surgery out of the way. We got the word in the paper yesterday that lake will cease being a half dried puddle in October. By that time the levee and spillway will be completely repaired and the problems with the lock and dam will be resolved. Rebuilding of the spillway park is progressing. The beach has been rebuilt, the boat launch area widened and the swimming area made larger. On the layout front I put the first foreground elements in place against the background so it appears the Sundown industrial area continues on the other side of the tracks and the railroad crossing lines up with a road on the foreground. The HD is having a sale on refrigerators and since I’m working two jobs right now I think I’ll divert some MRR funds and order one this morning. Looking at an energy star side by side unit that will throw ice and water out the front door. The new unit will cost $52/year to operate opposed to my current one that runs me about $18/month.
Jeff, what kind of foot surgery? Will this be an outpatient situation or are we going to have to sneak MRR magazines and a laptop into the hospital for you?

Haven't had to much MRR'ing time still. Been busy with kids n chores this week. We canned the last batch of canning for the year looks like, our garden is purrty well done producing I think.
Schools has started here, so I'll have fewer kids around, KC 1 or 2 days, but I'll have Yazee bout everyday, so trying to keep up with fall chores may be fun, since she's not big enough to help yet..
Plans for the day, a trip to Terre Haute to pickup the title for Mother's car, that's payed off now. Still no word from the insurance companies on repairs from her getting rear-ended last week. 3 n maybe 4 granddaughters are coming this evening for the night. I think I'll find someplace to hide with all those girls here.

Morning Gang: Well Mary Ann is at dialysis and I've fed every thing that needed it so I guess I can take a few minutes to relax. Normally I'd be in bed catching up on sleep that I didn't get because we had to get to dialysis. Since the puter is working all right I'll visit.
I see that Fergie has moved up in the world. Congratulations and Well Done. Yes being in command does have it's extras. Mainly it's a very responsible position. When anything goes wrong You're responsible. The busk doesn't go any higher. I hope that they get the parts to you soon. What ship are you on and does it have the FM engines?
My new tractor is in the shop again with some problems. The AC went out and it had a slight water leak. While fixing the water leak they found an oil leak so that has tobe taken care of also. Fortunately it's still under warrenty. That runs out on 7 Oct so I'm getting as much done now as I can. $33 grand for a machine and it's broke. Sheesh.
the drought has hirt us some. Well more then some really. We only have baled 106 bales of hay so far. Usually by this time we'd have more like 180 bales. If we don't get some off of John's place this fall we will have to cut back the heard or buy hay. We have some old cows that really need to be sold off but I'd like to be able to wait for the prices to get better. I hate to be in a position where we have to sell.
I haven't been to see the new grandboy this morning yet. When I get Mary Ann we'll go by. John's wife Dianne is doing well and may be able to go home with the baby today. That would be nice and I know she'd be happy. John's neice from California has been visiting this summer and has been working with him on fence jobs. She has been a big help. When we were doing the cattle she pitched right and did the taging and helped with getting them into the shutes. She is quite a worker and only 14 years old.
Well I'd better get going.

Hey David, long time no see Bud. Glad to see in your last email that you have a paying job now. Hope that doesn't interfere with school. I know it takes you 15-20 minutes just to get on here so I don't expect an answer here. Drop in at my forum sometime.
Good morning. Beautiful day today a bit chilly at which of 73F but sunny and 10% chance of getting wet. Like Jerry said, feels a bit like fall.Speaking of Jerry, I missed the all-u-can-eat pizza bar darn it! Instead I had a ham sandwich at the Red Cross station. One of the things we, me and my buddy, did yesterday was help the Christian Church people get the stuff out of the church and onto my buddies grain truck before the demo guy tore the place the rest of the way down. I do not understand for the life of me, why in the world you would hold up a $500 an hour machine and man for 3 ½ gals of bleach, a box if florescent tube light bulbs (bad bulbs that did not work to be recycled.) Styrofoam cups, plastic forks etc. The amount dollar wise of what was removed, was not worth the expense of the machine sitting there waiting. Speaking of the Christian church, after speaking with a National Weather Service storm assessment dude, one of the firefighters that was with him told me that he said the Church actually saved a lot of property and undoubtedly some lives because when a tornado hit’s a solid structure especially as solid and large as a brick church the rotation, at least at the ground, is disrupted and becomes less organized and therefore not as powerful (I guess that explains the hit and miss nature (sometimes depending on the strength) and “wow look what it did here but left that” comments that are always made after a Tornado) so since it was moving as fast as it was, and being busted up by the church the other houses where enough to keep it unorganized enough to not do the leveling effect it had on the Antique mall. The first building it hit. Williamsville is NOT very big so it was almost out of town and began to reorganize when it hit the back of the AG Center and took the chemical building with it. Then took off through the country to build back up. I guess the Man Upstairs still makes sacrifices for us too.
