I'll give it to you straight from the Texas State Railroad's website:
The Texas State Railroad needs your help. We are fighting two battles trying to save the TSRR.
One is the state's severe budget cuts, which have greatly impacted the TSRR and the Rusk State Park adjacent to the Rusk Depot. We have lost 17 employees, more than any park in the state, and the regular train runs from Palestine have been eliminated for 2006. TX is 50th in the U.S. funding it's state parks. We feel this is shameful and ask you to contact your state representatives and senators to ask them to help save our parks for future generations.
Please help the Friends of TSRR by contacting:
Gov. Rick Perry to request refunding for TSRR.

Secondly, Dallas is proposing to dam the Neches River for a reservoir. If this happens, the TSRR will be closed as the reservoir would cover the tracks between Rusk and Palestine where it crosses the Neches River. There is an alternative proposal of a wildlife refuge on the Neches River, which would not only save the railroad, but would protect the pristine area and wildlife along the river. The reservoir will not be built for many years to come, but the land can be taken by eminent domain. The refuge could happen in a short period of time, and would assure that the railroad and the river would remain for future generations to enjoy.
Please help the Friends of TSRR by contacting the names listed below to encourage the refuge as a proper use of the Neches River.
