so i want to start a new ho scale train set. I was convinced into buying a life-like starter kit, untill i called a store and the guy told me that life-like is crap and should not invest in it. He sais for me to go to the store and have him build me a bigginer set using atls tracks and a proto loco,. What should I do????

First off, I'd suggest going to the Model Railroader forum, you'll get great information there. Personally I totally agree with the store owner...

yes, the MR forum has more people on it. But do a search for similar topics, we get this a lot.
Train sets in general are not high quality, and you want to stay away from them. Life-like is not a good brand, but the Proto series are spectacular (Proto 1000 and proto 2000). Some other brands that I would suggest are Athearn, Kato, Atlas, and Bachmann Spectrum, though they don't have sets.

Well i see you have gotten great respinses ovr there and I agree 100%. Dont get a starter set.
