What modern engine do you like...?

  • Sorry that I couldn't post more in the poll but select "other" if you don't like any of those. [;)]

OK, I know some of these aren't modernly built, but are seen out on the rails today.

  • I like the SD70ACe.

  • Went with the SD40-2, as that's the only engine on your list that I see very often. I do like the GEVO and the ES44DC/AC though.

  • I chose other, meaning F40PH. Still the backbone of many commuter services for over 25 years.

  • Unfortunately I can't say I am thrilled with any REALLY modern engines, because I'm not a big fan of wide cabs. But, a train is a train, and they are still great despite that.

I agree as I even picked the SD40-2. The wide noses such as the ones you mentioned would have to be "seconds" on my list. The older "GPs" would be last, because they are old and running out of juice. Although, CSX still has a wide fleet of GP38 and 40-2s.

GE or GM (EMD) doesn't matter to me. I mean, if an engine was malfunctioning while I was in it or had a defect---then I probably would. GE seems to be a little more with the "wide nose categorie" now than GM (EMD), although GM (EMD) has been getting into wide noses---"SD70ACe" in which is a cool loco. The "ES44AC and DC" are good but they seem to smoke up a storm---at least when I saw them. The "GEVO" or "AC4500CW-CTE unit" rocks, but the only drawback is that no eastern railroads have em' so far.

The "SW1500" is okay, but I'm more for "horsepower" on the wide noses or even on some standard noses. Switching units really aren't my thing and neither are switching or shortline railroads.

So---I'll go GM (EMD) for once---SD40-2. (hey, it's also the most common diesel on CSX too)

  • I picked the SW1500, but I'm not sure a 30-40 yr old engine is modern. But I like the smaller power of the shortlines.
    Enjoy

  • I voted for the SD70M,but I prefer the SD70 standard cab units on the IC.These were the last units built that look like a real locomotive, the way God and Mr.Dillworth intended.[8D]

  • That SD70ace is a monster. And I like it !
  • British diesel High Speed Trains - still going strong after 30 years and with rebuilt engines good for a few years yet!
  • AC6000CW have awsome pulling and dynamic braking ability. Just a pure pleasure to operate.
  • I would have to say my favorite is the SD70ACe.
  • I like SD90s, because they are so big and powerful.
Saw some BNSF GEVOS being broken in, they are impressive too.
