  • There is still plenty of 4 axle power still around. Mostly GP 38-40-dash 2 and rebuilt GP 30 and 35's used in lesser service or converted into road slugs (CSX).
They're just not top dog mainline power as much these days.
NS has been rebuilding 4 axle power recently to GP 38 specs. I saw recently where some GP 50's were done this way.

  • Have only been on the site for ten minutes and learned something. I subscribe to Trains Magazine, and combined with this site, it will really help my railroad learning process. THANKS

  • Feed,
Out here in Phoenix, you see alot of the GP's mostly 38/40 and few 30's working all the industrail line and local switching. Both UP and BNSF out here have plenty still working and makin the pay

  • The price of scrap iron has jumped up in the last year or so. Right now is a good time to scrap unwanted locomotives. Sadly , many smaller geeps have bit the dust in the past year. If you are looking to buy a good operable EMD, be prepared to spend 50k and up for a good GP-9. Contact me via E-Mail, I have some GPs that may be for sale.

  • I live in Fond Du Lac,Wi,and there are quite a number of CN and WC GP38's,GP40's,and SW1500 and 1200's running around here in the Shops yard, doing local and long-haul switching manuevers. I know of another place that is about 170 miles northwest of where I live in the small village of Brokaw,(home to Wausau Papers) that has a leased Alco S-2 lettered RE1026.Its a bright yellow switcher. You can't miss seeing this diesel working the mill tracks, and boy does it like to belch out the black smoke when pulling a long set of loaded tank, box and covered hopper cars!!!![:D][8D][:P]
  • I SEE ABOUT 15 A MONTH OF GP'S AND 1 GE DASH 840BW EVERY 3 MONTHS

  • There's a lot of 4-axle power in Chicago. I see BRC's GP38-2's in pulldown duty at Clearing and BNSF uses GP30's, GP39-2's, GP39V's and others in yard and transfer service. CSX GP15T's are based in Chicago and UP uses GP15-1's in the UPY series for transfers.
