Why did the Union Pacific abandoned the Sterling-Denver line in the early 1990s

Good question, but they probably had no use for it.  The maintenance cost of keeping up the line compared to a few more miles going via Cheyenne probably was the reason.  I got to see a passenger train on that line in September of 1970 while on an excursion with the 8444 to Sterling and back.   We met one of the E units on a passenger train.

                           There was talk about 5 or 6 years ago of getting that line back due an overload of traffic, But nothing ever cameof it. It was a single track main line as i recall with STC CTC signals Larry
