  • Speaking of nicely putting situations, I'll nicely put this situation down. We can say goodbye to Milwaukee Road 261 in active service due to greed from NRM in Green Bay. I bet lots of people are gonna boycott the museum for this. I really don't have any interest in visiting the museum since a bunch of displays and a little loop train doesn't interest me. Rumors are flying that the ex-Friends of 261 group and IRM are close to getting 261's sister, 265 restored.

  • My history teacher last year's motto was "Everyone can learn." Let's just say that my class wasn't that smart (at all, but somehow, whoever did the scheduling matched the not so smart kids with the smart (but not honors) kids, like me), so he wrote it on the wall in honor of my class. And it's still there...

    Anyway, back on topic...
    Somehow, I never heard about that. But I can definately see that hapenning.

    Since the start of the month, there have been, oh, IDK, probably about 5 suicide/trespasser incidents on Transit. Yes, 5 in 3 weeks. It's rediculous. It seems like Transit is THE place to go for suicides...
    Yet I don't think anyone's ever sued for something like that.

     

    And I concur with Tyler, for once, can we keep it East Coast related? Please? Cause since all of you guys are Midwest, we feel kinda left out...
    And if not Eastern, then at least somwhat general? Like trespassing and suicides and sueing. lmaoBig Smile

  • I don't talk about that stuff because if I mentioned it it'd take 20 pages. 5 incidents in 3 weeks is like nothing here, we get times where we get 5 incidents in ONE week here!

     I gotta throw my J and news reports in sometimes! Tongue I'm trying to keep tabs on where every J unit is at all times just for reference. Not only that, this news with 261 isn't just bad news for the midwest, the entire nation is effected by this one! We are losing one of the most beautiful engines to roam the rails in the 21st century. Luckily I got three photos of the outside, plus one from the inside of it into RPs. Whenever I heard 261, this image is still always the first thing I remember.

  • I'll attempt to keep at least SOME Eastern stuff around by working off my backlog of photos from Wednedays in Boston...

    An Alewife-bound train screeches around the curve into the new Charles/MGH Station. Just out of view around the curve is the portal underground to Park Street and beyond.


  • Well sorry inturrupt in the east coast discussion, but I'm going to ahve to drop a midwest bomb. I have a trip report thats about two weeks old that needs to be post. Although most of you have probably seen it.

    On November 6th Brent came up to Wausau for the weekend. Our plan was to chase the 588 south to Stevens Point, and then see what was around the Stevens Point Area.

    Our trip started on the morning of November 8th arriving at the Wausau yard. The 588 hadn't left yet, and it seemed as though their whole train was put together. Well we decided to go to the North end of the yard and see what the switch crew was doing. By the time we got there the switcher was just taking off. After waiting for some time the switcher came back up with a long string of 3M loads. About this time we saw two cars pass by, we presumed it was the crew. We were just about to give up, but we decided to check one the south end of the yard one last time, sure enough the 588 had gotten its' crew. Not too long afterwards they got their warrant and the chase was on.

    Our first stop was Weston Wisconsin. A coal train had come up during the night and had a Dash 9, and a "Wedge" MAC. The 588 had made good time and was at Weston in a matter of minutes. These guys were really making some good time across Central Wisconsin.

    Our next stop was Mosinee Wisconsin. We wanted to get the "MOSIEE" station sign. Again, these guys made great time and few right by.

    We stopped at Mathy Wisconsin and watched the 588 switch out some rock cars. Here they nearly doubled the length of their train. After they finished up switching, Brent and I headed to Knowlton Wisconsin. This spot is probably the most photographed spot on the Valley Sub. Since the 588 was running late today, I knew the sun would be on the wrong side of the tracks. I decided to just try an angle I have been wanting to try lately. The 588 had to slow to cross the bridge and go around the tight corner.

    The next spot we hit was a spot I have been wanting to get for a while. County Highway H. The 588 had just crested a grade and was speeding down hill towards JO.

    As arrived in Junction City, the 588 was right on top of us. I thought the light at this angle would have been better, but it wasn’t.

    At Stevens Point we heard that the 588 needed to wait out side of Point at Clark Street. We took a drive around Point since we had time. We saw a bright orange locomotive by the depot. Sure enough EJ&E 665 was sitting out front.

    Not long afterwards 665 backed into the yard, and the 419 pulled up on the main in front of the depot. The 588 got the clear once the yard was cleaned out with all the switchers. Nose dark, but I like how you can see that the class lights are on.

    After the 588 cleared, the 419 got the green light.

    Some train was shoving on track two as the 419 crossed. EJ&E 665 was backing a cut of cars down the New Page Spur. We headed over to New Page to check out what they were switching. We heard a Warrant get handed out for a train to get off the P-Line and back into the yard. It was EJ&E 669.

    After getting them we headed back to New Page where I got some shots of EJ&E 665 in great light.

    That is it for my pictures. The 588 headed south and blacked Hoover Road for a while. Another train rolled into Point as the sun was going down. Last, the 589 left with a lone GP40-2W that was in the center of the consist on the 588.

    Nice shots, by the way. I like the slight star effect in the first shot! Am I the only one that thinks the CN nose on 2501 is really ugly?

     Hey I did catch 675 leading the Line Train.

    By the way, 660 was spotted leading a train up Byron Hill with WC 3018, so 660 is the 8th J to be reassigned to the WC, as 663 is now on the WC also. It's just a matter until Jordan's favorite unit, the 666 shows up! Tongue

    You do that, and I'll get Transit. I have tons of stuff from JULY that I haven't gotten to yet. I've been busy. Research papers SUCK.

    Jordan: Nice shots! The bridge shot came out well, minus the lighting.

    Robby: No doubt that there's times when there's more than that. We get weeks like that too. Like last winter, there was one week that was awful. It all started on a Monday, when someone laid on the rail while a train was stopped at Linden, and was sliced in half (aka Ziplocked [as in the bag] or Zippered...) when it pulled out. And the crew didn't notice, so the next crew were lucky enough to find the guy split over the rail... And then the rest of the week just went downhill from there...

    Now, as promised, I'll post a Transit shot, to keep the East alive.
    This is the Red Bank station. It is one of the few remaning original stations, and it's in decent condition. Could use a little paint, and it's missing some shingles, but overall it's not lookin too bad.
    And excuse the blurry shot, but I was on a quickly moving train...

  • That's a neat station, Joe!

    MBTA 1015, an F40PH-2C locomotive, at Boston North Station. I wasn't trespassing on the right of way here, I was shooting THROUGH a chain-link fence! That's one of the biggest advantages of a point-and-shoot camera for a railfan - the tiny lens can fit right into the fence! Smile


  • Yes it is! It's unique, because it has the preserved station (it's on the National Register of Historic Places), yet it's also modernized with high level platforms (where the MultiLevels DON'T hit them Wink

    Speaking of Multilevels, a set in Bay Head began service today. It is down there, hooked up to PL42AC 4019. It will run on 2302/2309 beginning tomorrow, although it ran on a shuttle (BH-LB) today. When (if) I go down the shore over the weekend, I'll see if I can stop by and grab a shot.
    From a photo I saw, it would appear that there are at least 4 PL42s currently in BH, possibly more. The ML set is on Track 1, and there is still that single ML/PL42 on Track 3.
    If anyone is interested in a link to another forum with ML in BH photos and info, PM me, since I can't post it here.

    Also, I hear that Transit is only waiting for 4 more MLVs to roll off the assembly lines. Not sure how many haven't been delivered yet, but the order(s, all, like, 4 of them!) are nearly filled.

    And now to continue bombarding (no pun intended, has nothing to do with Bombardier who builds the MLs) this place with east coast stuff...

    This is one of NJT's unique MP20B-3 switchers. It was rebuilt, along with 1001-1005, by MPI from retired GP40FH-2s 4130-4134 (basically only the frames; everything else is new).

    At this rate, if I post one shot every day, I'll have enough to keep loading you guys through the end of the year...

    Reverting back to English, let's play I Spy a Train! Shown here is the Red Line and Commuter Rail flyover south of Boston. See if you can find both trains! This is shot from the Prudential Tower Skywalk Observatory, about 700 feet above the streets below. A short blurb about this appeared in the August 2009 Issue - my first Trains byline.

  • A fun day last Monday up on the Iron Range. No maroon, but plenty of action, anyway. First up, as with my last major trip up there, I caught the MRF, this time heading over the diamond at Ramshaw.

    Later on, on a pass through the UniTac area, a headlight is spotted in the distance. Oddly enough, it's a Manifest heading north on the Missabe. These usually run on the Peg, so I'm led to believe this is a trial run, with the work in Proctor Yard still going on strong.
