  • Canadian National was originally a Crown Corporation which served as the entity for the nationalization of various insolvent railroads, primarily the Canadian Northern and the Grand Trunk Pacific. Several other insolvent carriers were added during WWI and the early 1920's. CN was dependent on a certain amount of subsidy to cover its fixed costs. CV, GTW & DW&P were always the US subsidiaries of CN.
CN was privatized in 1994 and at that time absorbed Illinois Central. Wisconsin Central had previously absorbed Algoma Central and was later sold to CN. According to the January issue of TRAINS, CN is buying DM&IR and B&LE primarily to obtain a key stretch of trackage in the Twin Ports area. B&LE and Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock don't connect with the rest of CN so it should be interesting to see what happens next.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
