Genesis suck! Stick with the F40PH

Just a question are you a mason? Because those p42s look like a brick with a 45 dagree angle cut in them[xx(]UGLY
LOOK IN MY PICTURE BELOW .....THAT IS REAL PASSENGER POWER AN E9, FP7,F9 THAT IS REAL POWER, but I guess that GE just dosn't get it....

More bandwidth, wasted on a useless post. Sigh.
Let's think logically. Or is that asking too much? Amtrak was SMART by dumping the F40PH's. They ran them since the '70's! Figure up mileage for a moment. Were they still running them in the number they were, there'd be at least one case of one exploding into a ball of fire, killing most aboard the train! Okay, so maybe that's an exaggeration. But I would hope someone knows what I mean.

Come on take a perfectely good locomotive and make it into a baggage/cabcar. If you get a new locomotive they should have gotten new updated F40PH or since it would be newer F41PH or F40PHX. After all you don't need a Crapper in the locomotive put the HEP in the nose and a bigger engin in back.

As stated, it would not be cheaper to make it into a cabcar/a whole new loco. Also, you'd have a problem with rust. Take that into consideration? They have problems as it is. If they had converted them, they'd be buying new locomotives again soon, anyway! The F40PH's would be rust-buckets on rails soon enough. So, you'd have the cost of rebuilding added onto the cost of new locomotives.

  • Many of us are fans of the EMD bulldog nose, myself included, but its production was quite labor-intensive, even compared to Alco's flatnose. That probably goes a long way in explaining why a bulldog nose hasn't been built in North America since 1964.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
  • Guys, If I had to design a new 4000HP passenger unit, I'd want to put it in an EMD e-Unit carbody. The Genesis isn't the best looking locomotive that's come along in the last few years, but it's the one Amtrak opted for. I love the F-40 units. They did a great job for over 30 years. That's pretty good considering the "book" life on a diesel is 15-20 years. If keeping them for another 10-15 years was as easy as dropping a new prime mover into them, that would be great. It's just not that easy though. Back in the 50's several railroads re-engined some Baldwin units with EMD prime movers. It worked okay, but not for another 20 years per unit. F-40 lovers, including me, take heart. There a still quite a few in commuter service in quite a few locations.

If you really think about it the F40 is just a brick with the front and rear corners cut off to create what appears to be a double sided arrow. I don't have facts to back this up but it'd make sense to say that the Genesis is also more aerodynamic (and then more fuel efficient) than the F40, is that hypothesis right?

I will agree that the round nose (F-units, E-units, even modern stuff like F59 and MP36) are the best looking passenger power.

Larry: How are you gentlemen !!
Larry: All your locomotives are belong to ge.
Larry: F40PH are on the way to destruction.
    Engineer: What you say !!
Larry: F40PH have no chance to survive make your time.
Larry: HA HA HA HA ....
Engineer: Take off every 'EMD' !!
Engineer: You know what you doing.
    Engineer: Move 'EMD'.

  • ai yai yai. we get it. you dont need to comedically express your hatred of the cooler locomotive anymore. by the way, you may want to delete your sonic advice ytmnd of the 2 amtrak locos. nothing but bad reviews. dont shoot the messenger though.

i personally hate the F40s. they were ugly in my honest opinion. i like the new sleek design the genesis has
