  • I am not entirerly sure, but I believe there is a gap in the middle of the DD40's extremely long hood so that the crews didn't have to walk aroand the whole locomotive to get to another side on the walkways...
At least that is what a guy at a train museam told me...
I bet there are more practical purposes too...

    Hope that helps.
  • THE GAP IN THE DDA40X IS THE STARTER CONTROLS FOR THE 2 ENGINE. THIS INFO IS FROM THE DDA40X MANUAL.

  • The DD40X is 2 GP40 welded together back to back with one cab removed. The space is where the 2 were put together. Joe A.

  • well i am not sure some time back when the UP was short of power they re activated a bunch of the old DD40-X's and statred moving freight with them they were refered to as the rail straighteners whit their 8 weel trucks glenn bob
  • what is the term rail straighteners?

  • Rail-straightener ;the 8 wheels 4 in line on on the same truck had a hard time making it through tight turns some people thing this is why the DD40-X was retired so soon. for the same reason yard switchers have 4 wheel trucks thus the GP-40 as to the SD-40 with 6 wheel trucks >>>glennbob
  • There is a DD40x here in Illinois, at the Illinois Railway Museum
