Trackside with Erik and Mike, Volume 36 voting

  • I went with Mike and the White Face...though the yellow face is good too. I really feel this is a tie...but you don't give that choice in the voting.

  • I usually like Erik's photos, but Mike has been gaining on him lately. I still like the BN green and white over anything of CSX but based my vote on Mike's picture, definitly the better one. I still prefer steam over diesel or electric anyday.
  • To me, Mike's photo just screamed "mainline railroading." For some reason, whether it was perspective or lack of smoke/headlights/broader scenery scope, Erik's seemed to me like it was taken on one of the many branch lines we have here in Oregon.
  • Erik's photo of the CSX unit is a bit uncommon and is a good pic, so I gave it my vote.
  • Awesome photos, both of you! I have to go mike's photo of the BN SD60, as you can see more of the train and the lighting is more dramatic. Plus, BN is a fallen flag, and we must cherish what is left of it!

Wanna know of an awesome railroad? Go see the Montana Rail Link. It is full of beatiful scenery, endless photography opertunitys and the ast 4 F45s in the country!

How about those "heritage"Union Pacific locos???

    happy trainwatching to everyone!
  • Mike get's the vote this week. Both pics basically the same, Erik's a little closer but Mike's shows a little more drama. Some will probably object to the darkness, but I like it.
Shows a little drama, for lack of a better word.
Keep up the good work, I enjoy your pics & comments.

  • I like the BN loco.
  • I am doing as the photographers ask and voting on the better photo, this time it's Mike's. Now, BETTER, is just an opinion. The brooding evening coming in made for a better setting, some would say the other had better lighting, tough call. The heat waves and exhaust seemed to have the BN train working harder, and you can see the fleshtones of both crew, not a silhouette of one and the window glare hiding the other.
Great shots, had to return to the art of the shot. Thanks for your efforts always.
  • Both shots are ok but Mike's was a little better. I do wish you guys could get some good Amtrak shots. I need a cool picture for my desktop and the Texas Eagle and Sunset Limited are never late enough for me to see them in the daylight. :(

  • Tough choices again.

This time the BN whiteface SD60M + train won out.

I think I must really be tired of that new CSX paint scheme. Looks to be more of a hazard than help at fresh image.
"There is nothing in life that compares with running a locomotive at 80-plus mph with the windows open, the traction motors screaming, the air horns fighting the rush of incoming air to make any sound at all, automobiles on adjacent highways trying and failing to catch up with you, and the unmistakable presence of raw power. You ride with fear in the pit of your stomach knowing you do not really have control of this beast." - D.C. Battle [Trains 10/2002 issue, p74.]

I voted for Erik's, but not because I liked his photo more. No I voted for Erik's because I liked the photo he did NOT submit- the "going away" shot of the same lashup. Now THAT was a great photo...you can see the differences in the heighth of the locomotives, you can see the things in a going away photo that just don't show up in a "train coming" photo. And the lighting on that shot is just short of stunning. Please do this at least once a month--maybe compete in "going away shots." Oh, and one other thing: What happened to the great concept of not telling us who shot which photo? I thought that was going to be the rule now? Thanks.

I totally agree, why is there more of the coming at you run me over shots than see ya later photos, eh?

  • I voted for Mikes, I dunno...maybe an ACe off home rails. I love the John Deere factory tour thing, that's awesome, I was there in 2001 when they built an 8410 tractor of ours.
