Trains.com Index of Magazines

  • I just signed on today and at this time are experiancing the "kid in the candy store" syndrome. I'm currently planning my first layout in some thirty years. All my stuff is still in boxes. But I believe that a tool of this type is some thing that will be of a big help.Let the rails fall where they may,I'm looking forward to this road to carry me to retirement Mark
  • I've known about it from the beginning and while I think it is a good start I've found it to be just too generic. What I would really like to see (and I realize the effort here would probably be far beyond what you could provide) would be a searchable index along the lines of your annual magazine index. I've managed to get most of the MR indexes and I keep photocopies of all of them in a binder. I use this reference almost every month for one reason or another. It is slow because you have to look up the same general heading (for example Prototype Drawings) each year in order to "track down" the drawing of interest. I would love to have all of the MR and CTT indexes on a searchable CD - better yet - I'd love to have a complete set of MR on CD which could be searched by author, title, keyword, and subject.

National Geographic has done this with their magazines. Their search engine works as described above and when it lists the pertinent articles it lists them in order of appearance in the magazine by month and year so it is very easy to work your way through the CD set.

I note that you don't have much information about Finelines - the precursor to Narrow Gauge Gazette. I have most of the issues. If you would like, I'd be glad to sit down and type up a list of article titles by author and issue so you could have more information in that area.
  • This may make my modelling easier as I can remember certain articles but not the edition they were printed in, Thanks!

  • Boy am I embarrassed [#oops] I did not know it was there. But I do now ! I will sure use it, Thanks for the heads up.
  • will use it from now on
  • Thanks for the chance to participate in the survey. More than that, thanks for making the magazine index available! I have often used it to research various topics. Once I find the issues I need, I will either get my local library to get me a copy of that article, or else order the magazine from Kalmbach or Railpub.

    Thanks for this great service!

  • Hi all,

I've been using it as far back as when someone else hosted the resource.

Quickest way to find all types of info, not least the issue and page for particular drawings of a specific "whatever".

  • It's a great resource. Thanks for hosting it. I have magazines back to the beginning of MR and the majority of model RR magazines. I have used the printed indexes that Atephans printed some years ago and purchased a version on CD before Accurail hosted the index. I find it indispensable. I agree that sometimes it is challenging to find the right combination of key words, but I don'thtink I would ever find somethings in my thousands of magazines. The person who mentioned the NMRA library was a good suggestion. That is probably the most accessable complete collection there is.
  • I don't use it often enough. But it sure is helpful.
