Overpowered trains

  • What about the Acela. It has way too much power for the speed it travels on average. Much or the rout is shared with freight trains and is always slowed down because of it. Until Amtrak can give the acela its own track were it is free to use its power it is a waste of time money and... oh yeh, LOTS OF ENERGY.
  • Most amusing overpowered train I saw was an SD60F, 2 GMD1, GP9 and a slug pulling 9 86 foot autoboxes.

This sounds like power redistribution. Most of those units are likely deadheads being relocated to match expected demand.

The other possibility, and you would know the specific train far better than I, is that you are looking at a local that has dropped off or is going to pick up a substantial block of cars. This has been known to happen, for example, with traffic from TX Crushed Stone north of Austin (that is the quarry that primarily is responsible for generating that huge tonnage line on the traffic density map between Austin and Houston on everybody's favorite whipping boy RR), where the local will come up from SAT and arrive with, say, 10 cars and 6 units, and then leave for HOU with 80 cars (the 10 cars + 70 loads of crushed rock) and the 6 units.

I once saw 30 + UP locos with no cars go through Binney Jct California EB on the WP line. This was sometime after the WP, but before the SP merger.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

  • I would rather be on a overpowerd train going up a hill than an underpowered one. HA HA HA
