Alco Rs-1 question

  • I have sifted through what seems like a ton of pics on the internet and I am still left with one question on the rs-1 loco.  Where would the bell be located on this loco?  I can't seem to see one on any of the pics.  Was it a frame mounted bell or am I missing it somewhere else?

    Thanks

The RS1s I have detailed have the bell frame mounted just behind the front truck on the right hand side running long hood forward. Thats where the PRR had ALCO put theirs. Some may have been bracket mounted elsewhere. That would depend on the rail road.

  • Thans Pete.  So they were all frame mounted then.

Not neccessarily, a lot would depend on the railroad you're modeling. In the first place not all railroads ran thier RS's long hood forward. Santa Fe for example ran thiers short hood forward. All that considered, they still had the bell in the same place.

  • Would a bell have ever been mounted on the hood itself?  Say between the sand hatches on the long hood or just behind the radiator?

  • Excellent Pete.  Thank you very much..  I would never have seen the frame mounted bell without your help.  The long hood bell I have never seen before on the rail pics site.  I must have overlooked it.

  • Hi, I have pix of a New Haven RS-1 at the Danbury RR Museum. The bell is on top of the long hood right above the headlight. There is also an RS-1 at the Whippany RR Museum in New Jersey where the bell is located in front of the cab underneath the roof overhang. Bell location depended on the railroads specifications when the units were ordered. If you send your email address to j.norris1@att,net I can forward you some pix that I have.
  • One thing to keep in mind, especially if looking at pics of engines that were just built or just being delivered, is that some railroads ordered their diesels without bells and then added bells from the steam engines the diesels were replacing.

I know Northern Pacific did that, Minneapolis and St.Louis did too. Here's a pic of an M-St.L RS-1 with a steam engine bell mounted by the railroad's shop crew on the long hood....

  • Thanks everyone for the info.  I have a couple bells that would work good on the long hood.  Thanks again
