  • Yeah, I do feel lucky to live in the Chicago area, I don't go ANYWHERE without my camera, even if I am not planning on railfanning that day, it's almost impossible not to run into something traveling around here, some of my best catches are actually ones I happened to come across by accident. I am more on the southwest suburbs on the Santa Fe side of the BNSF, the former GM&O, the former Rock and of course the EJ&E.

I just had a good day yesterdat with a GP38-2 leading the IAIS, CR power on the BNSF and the Cascades NPCU again. Not a bad day! I'll have photos up soon.

  • Look what I found in some obscure folder on my computer... I completely forgot about that photo!

  • I hope to go to a train show in two weeks in Edison. While I'll be in the area, it would be nice to stop at Metropark. With four tracks and New Jersey Transit and Amtrak stopping at the station, there would be no lack of traffic. And since it would be the weekend, ACES would be running!

  • Here is my latest trip report from last Sunday.

The Cascades NPCU heads north through Lemont. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1503196

Iowa Interstate GP38-2 705 leads CBBI east through Joliet. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1503197

    Another one. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1503198

BNSF 6125 passes under the ATSF signals at Verona. These will soon be coming down. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1503199

A nice sight of a CR painted NS unit at Mazon. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1503200

    Overall, not a bad day!

  • I wonder if there's a Hiawatha NPCU operating on the Cascades service...Mischief

  • Interesting photos lately. I don't have any to share still. UP messed with the schedule here and now I havent the slightest idea when stuff shows up. I'll be surveying Altoona for a lot of the summer though and try to figure this mess out.

But what UP did was change the LTB55/LTS56 to MSSBU/MBUSS. So now the train runs from South St Paul to Butler and back instead of just to Altoona. This has its plusses since now both trains run at the same time and that means I have a chance to catch a 4th consist instead of just 3. Then the MBUVP was changed back to the MPRVP while the MVPPR remains as it is. UP's idea is that the MSSBU/MBUSS will deal with all the work and have the cuts all ready to go for when MPRVP/MVPPR come to pick them up. Plus they also will deal with the South St Paul traffic. Then MVPPR/MPRVP will simply fly right through and grab cuts as they go. So far, they still all show up here in the dead of night. But the changes are still pretty fresh and summer may see new arrival times.

EJE merger. That really is a shame. While I was definitely not into EJE very much (I need something mightier than an SD38-2 for a railroad to gain my interest), I know CN wont be as nice to the crews or the customers as EJE was. Plus this will result in less interchange traffic on UP and will bring down the number of trains UP runs on their east/west main.

All this CN crap though. Ugh. And I'll tell ya. I really miss WC. Had it not been for my time spent with 7495 at LSRM, I may have gone insane out of SD45 deprivation. Glad CN donated 2 though. Wouldve been nice seeing them in black/red/white instead of razor blades though.

Ahem. Show me a train that you promise 3 Missabe SD38-2's cant haul, and I will show you a liar.

  • I know they have power, but I live by UP. So since I study UP the most and all their SD38-2s are UPY, I can't help but see them as yard power.

  • I've never actually seen UP in person. Or anything that doesn't run on the east coast (well, most of it anyway).

Caught a train leaving Lake Hopacong this morning on the way to school. It was a four car solid CV consist being shoved towards Hoboken by PL42AC 4027. There were rumors that it was being scrapped because of frame damage, but there's clearly nothing wrong with it. Nothing looks better that a solid train with the new paint scheme (Comet Vs, Multilevels, PL42ACs, ALP-46s (A units should be arriving late 09/early 10), and P40DCs). Not to mention that a PL42/CV consist is entirely Alstom-built.

As of Thursday (2/19), there are only two sets of Comet Is running in the system. IIRC, they are/were based out of Suffern on the Port Jervis Line. Keep an eye out for CIs on Metrolink, Caltrain, Frontrunner, AMT, and SEPTA. These things are almost 40 years old, and they'll keep rolling for a few more years all around the country.

  • The J never used SD38-2s for yard power. They pull anything from locals to coal and taconite trains up and down hills. CN already degraded 673 and 671 to yard power, which really doesn't please me too much, plus they sent 670 and 672 packing for Iowa. I really hope if they do send any up to the Missabe, they only send 2-4 more, not half the fleet. From what I heard the rumor said a decent portion of them, so for me, that's not good.

  • I saw a lot of UP stuff in Salt Lake City... Plus of course the UP Centennial and Big Boy in Omaha in the old Kenefick park.

So I suppose those solid CI consists I filmed on NJT last year were pretty rare... And with the GP40PH and FH catches... Wow! I wish the videos I took weren't so shaky... And I wish I'd brought my still camera!

  •  Yeah I know SD38-2s can pull a lot, it's just due to UPY and all, I've been psychlogically conditioned to see SD38-2s as yard power.

Call it a "turbocharge bias". I've always been a favorer of power I guess. Thus why I will always prefer SDs over geeps any day of the week. I'll always like it more if it looks more powerful than anything else I like.

And that's probably also why I favor SD60s over SD40-2s and spartan cabs over high hoods. It's SD45s that get a bit tough for me though...Because on one hand, the SD45-2 is bigger, longer, and tougher than the SD45. Plus it has HTC trucks...But the SD45 has flared radiators.

    Your friendly neighborhood CNW fan.

  • Nice photos, Tyler. I have all kinds of old stuff that I need to scan in, a lot of stuff that can't be seen anymore, like WC SD45s, unpatched BNs regularly, EJ&E SW1200s in the old mineral brown paint, and EJ&E SDMs in Joliet.

Some of UP's SD38-2s are real, but I think a good portion of them are fake SD38-2s rebuilt from SD40-2s. The J has the biggest roster of SD38-2s in the country and since the DM&IR had mostly SD38s, the J had by far the largest.
