  • There are still quite a few engines in the warbonnet color scheme still lettered for Santa Fe running around the system. Many have had the BNSF sublettering done at the cab above the number, but retaining the Santa Fe lettering across the long hood. A few months ago there were two SD-70 engines running out of LA that appeared to have almost new warbonnet paint and lettering for Santa Fe. With the rate that the older warbonnet engines are being repainted I would guess that we still have a few years before the red and silver paint disappears entirely.
  • I don't think we've seen the last of the red/silver warbonnet. It was revitalized once before and someday after they've all been painted over they'll bring it back.

Incidently, I get the impression from a Santa Fe Railway history book that the EMD SD75Ms and the GE Dash 8-40BWs were the last types purchased by the Santa Fe before BNSF and probably the last ones painted in warbonnet scheme. I'm gonna assume that there are no Dash 9s (or very, very few) painted in warbonnet?
