Amtrak Philadelphia to Harrisburg

  • Just out of curiousity does anyone know if the Amtrak Philly to Harrisburg line still has a cattonary system or the remains there of. I have an spv railroad atlas and it has that section of track electrified. How up to date is this information? [?]

  • Having travelled that section of track on the 3 Rivers less than two weeks ago, I can confirm that the caternary is still in place. Unknown as to if the "juice" still flows through it. We didn't change to an electric locomotive until Philly, so I have to assume that there ain't no "juice" flowing in the Harrisburg lines.
  • You might want to check SEPTA's web page. They used to run to Harrisburg if I am not mistaken and use both self propelled and AEM7's for power.
  • Yes, the wire is in use, but just for Septa. Most Amtrak Trains come from New York are powered with AMD-103´s. A friend of mine told me that a few trains are powered with electrics, but that might be not very often he said.

  • Im from near the line and SEPTA uses electric trains as far as Coatsville, Pa. Amtrak dosent use electric on the line at all I think. the wires are still up the way from philadelphia to Harisburg but only Amtrak diesel trains run under them.
  • I'm pretty sure I've seen some amtrak electrics on the line, I just can't think of any offhand. But yes, the line is still electrified and in use.
