  • Two things...

I REALLY want that IC 6000 to make it on A405, and Im royally jealous that Robby is getting HLCX units in his area! HLCX is my favorite leasing company, but since CSX got all of its GEVOs, the HLCX stuff has been stored all over the place. So, please get a bunch of shots, I'd love to see them.

Today the power for the WC was CN 2243 and a 25XX Dash 9. Not exactly mouth watering (which is good or else my mouth would have froze!).

Not even close........remember bout two yrs ago when we paced the Brainerd local, just got my pictures developed, only one or two of them don't suck

  • -60? HAHAHAHA!! It doesn't get that cold south of the 49th. It just doesn't.  -40 with a 20 degree windchill maybe, but -60? Not a flippin' chance!

i love helm too. all of CNW's SD60s went to them and are being liberated from that god awful UP paint to sleek neat helm blue. it'd be nice to get them up here. but UP would never do that. so i need to go to TX and see them there. not to mention UP's whole SD60 fleet.

all the good stuff is in TX. it's nice to see SD40-2s up here, but after the 130th one, they get old. ya know?

Are you talking about the Standard SD60s? or are SD60Ms included too? I think the SD60s are sweet locos. I've seen a SOO SD60M leading a SOO SD60 in Winona. Sadly I basical missed it, so there was no pictures. But I did get some video.

Anyway caught these 2 SD60Ms at Rochelle a while back on a ballast train.

My last trip to Rochelle was probably the best. Out of all the UP trains I saw, at least 75% had full SD40-2s or had more than half of the consist was SD40-2s. The best consist was a complete Rainbow with a UP SD40-2 leading, a Ex CNW SD40-2, a Ex Conrail SD50, and a NS Dash 9.

  • I got a report that one of the HLCXs, the one in the SDP45 body, was leading a local with a "J" SD38-2 a few days ago. These are so much better then the HLCX SD38-2s in patched UP paint that were leased last year. Hopefully some of the HLCXs turn up on the Western Sub soon. My guess is they are here mainly for the taconite trains from BNSF. The 650 is in the shops getting a new prime mover so the "J" is short of power. The 650 is one of the 4 engines with the old scheme so hopefully Gary doesn't send it to Horicon for the chevron scheme. Despite the pending CN merger, SW1200 303 was sent to Horicon for the new yellow switcher scheme, so they are still repainting.

Jordan, I've been to Rochelle many times. While it isn't the most photo friendly location, the amount of trains passing through make it a place very worth visiting, plus if you go during the summer, IRM is only a hour away from there. I'm looking forward to seeing WC 7525 pulling passengers, CNW 4160, and the CB&Q SD24 should hopefully be ready sometime this year.

Things are different with lake superior two years the schools close because it was -50, and yes it has hit -60 in Duluth mn while I've lived here, the lake does odd things to weather fronts, most the snow goes to the south shore and the cold temps stay on the north shore, or Canadian lows come in and things get hairy when they hit the somewhat warm (40 degree) lake water.

just SD60s. SD60Ms are part of the EMD 60 series, but they arent SD60s....only SD60s are SD60s. if one considers an SD60M or an SD60F to be an SD60, then they may as well consider GP60s to be SD60s too. i mean they have the same innards too.

that being said, i DESPISE SD60Ms. i can tolerate the ones with 2 windows. but i hate hate HATE the ones with 3. they look like sick mutated locomotives that escaped from some lab.

  • Max, I've explained to you at least twice why that point of view is wrong...please don't bring it here.

I think your logic is a little skewed. SD60Ms and Sd60s are the same thing. The statistics I have for the SD60 runs (SD60, SD60F, SD60M, SD60I) are as fallows. I want you to notice as you read this that besides the cab or carboy EVERYTHIN ELSE IS THE SAME. I just didn't bother repeating it four times!

    Length: 71'2"

    Engine: 16-710G

    Horsepower: 3,800

    Alternator: AR11

    Traction motors: D87B

Wight is some thing that is locomotive specific.

What I'm getting at is the only difference is carboy types, if you want to disagree with how  the company who builds the locomotives classifies them that fine with me.

  • Well, I finally got my shots edited from Saturday. Took me longer than expected, but it's finals week for me, so I've been busy.

We started the day at Nekoosa, where we found one of the Domtar's little NW2s waiting for it's next assignment:

Domtar has three engines, and they run back and forth on about 5 miles of track between two paper mills south of Wisconsin Rapids. They're kind of neat little switchers, though they aren't the same as the ALCos they used to have from the photos I've seen. Both mills are set to be shut down in a few months too, so what will happen to the railroad stuff I don't know.

Next stop was the Wisconsin Rapids yard. There was quite a bit of interesting power around, including the WC 3024 and a IC unit:

A few hours later we heard these guys getting a warrant to Plover, and based upon Brent's photos he must have gone up the branch line from Plover to Stevens Point.

Next we headed for Junction City (or JO as it's called because of the tower that used to be there). Just as we got up there a UP unit train (probably either potash or grain, I'm not sure which) was just getting out onto the main line. We chased and got ahead of him at Aburndale for a so-so back lit shot:

With nothing else around but a dead train in the siding, we decided to head for Point and see what was up there. We found a SW1500 and a CN slug set working the yard:

While we were sitting there train 301 snuck through the yard on us. Shortly after he got through town the Dispatcher called him to have him stop short of Junction city to meet train 346 that was coming east. So it was back towards Junction City we went. We made it to the little town of Miladore west of JO for a shot of him:

Then it was back to JO, where the 346 stopped on the main as the 301 passed on the siding:

    The meet shot:

With that traffic seemed like it was drying up, so we headed back to the Rapids. When we got there we found the UP run through train getting ready to head north. The UP MBUIT runs on the Adams Line to Necedah, where it gets on the CN to go north to Superior (and the UP's Itasca Yard). Bad lighting I know, but here it is anyway:

There was a GTW unit laying around with a pair of IC units when we had been by in the morning. One IC unit had been taken off for another job, allowing for a clear shot of the GTW unit:

Next thing was a train that was headed for Nekoosa Junction. He was leaving the yard just as we got there, so we chased him south:

Arriving Nekoosa Junction. The track in the foreground is actually the Domtar main line:

Anybody know the symbol for that train? My guess is that it's just called a Nekoosa Shuttle, but I don't know for sure.

We decided to give up the chase of him when we heard the UP dispatcher give a warrant to train down on the Adams Line. He was setting up a meet at Valley, which is a siding near Wyeville. So it was off to Wyeville we went, where we found quite a suprise!:

    The going away shot:

I've never seen CN power on the UP before, but here were two CN units leading a molten sulfur tank train. While I normally don't really care for CN stuff much, seeing it on the Adams line was a nice catch indeed. And to think we went all the way to Stevens Point to see CN stuff, when we could have just headed out to the Adams line...

That's all I've got from the day. Not the best trip I've ever had, but I came away with some decent pictures I think. Hopefully I didn't overload anybody's computer with pics, and enjoy!

  • A GP9 with a Alco cab, and a GE fuel tank? That's new. (CN Geeps in Noah's shots)

    Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

    2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

  • Thats just wrong.
