Anyone alike the BN??

  • I don't have anything against BN , but BNSF is so poorly run at least around here .
  • I love the BN, the shortline that I volunteered in the shop for had two of the old GP10 Paducah rebuilds.  When one of them was repainted, #1410, I got the beacon and one of the glass number boards.  The beacon is still functional and will operate on 12vdc with tractor lamps in the housings.  I am working on a 110ac to 74vdc power supply to get it back to full brightness.  Currently I am in the process of bashing a Lionel G scale GP20 into a GP10 to model the 1410.  I prefer the years before BN removed the beacons from the diesels and before crawford hill got totaly redone.   I was out there in the early 90's around crawford with some friends.  I love the sound and sight of several of the big 6 axle GE's dragging coal over crawford hill, then the EMD SD40-2 pusher team on the rear doing all they can to push it up and over!  I have several hours of home video from crawford hill, areas around there, then up by the thunder mines in the powder river basin.   Cheers    Mike

  • Why cant BNSF just leave the predecessor units unpatched whats the big deal? Its a way to show the public how they came to be in the first place! This sucks i dont get to railfan as much i would wish especially by the BNSF. The only BNSF power i see around here is runthrough on the NS which isnt to bad except for all the pumpkins, but one day in 2006 i thought it was 1994 again i saw 3 BN SD70MAC's on the point of a coal train. Too bad i didnt have my camera but who knows i will hopefully be able to see an unpatched Mac before there all gone.

well everyone says the same thing about UP and the patches. be thankful BNSF's don't ruin the look of the locomotive completely. they match the paint scheme. so one could argue that the patches were made like that to keep SOME heritage.

better hurry and catch those SD70MACs. they're being worked on as we speak. let's hope the headlights arent moved when they get patched

Thankfully CN doesn't patch there units! Big Smile [:D]

  • Right on there! Just imagine what patched WCs would look like, ick! Keep in mind though that the WC, as well as IC, GTW etc are technically still railroads on paper, but are run as part of the CN. That is probably why you don't see patches on CN. I like on how on BNSF they use white patched for BN engines, blue patches for bluebonnets, yellow patches for warbonnets, and now matching swoosh patches on the SD70MACs. The only patch jobs I don't like are the SD70MACs with the BNSF logo patched over BN on the front, yuck! They haven't been doing that with the recent patches. I wouldn't be surprized if BNSF drops the headlights on the first order of SD70ACes. I'm surprized they even showed up on BNSF with those cab headlights! Remember, BNSF plans to have all of the SD70MACs patched by the end of this year, and I've seen quite a few photos of SD70MACs with swoosh patches on them lately, so they could mean it this time. Are there any unpatched cascade green engines left? If there are, I wonder if BNSF will use white swoosh patches for them.

  • I have lived a couple blocks from there main lines heading into chicago all my life and my dad is a Burlington Route/Great Northern nut so its kinda hard not to lol

I miss the BN commuter trains before metra started hauling them Disapprove [V]

  • I disapointed when BNSF started to drop the headlight from the cab to the nose on the SD40-2 and the SD60Ms. They need to leave the BN locos alone and bring back the pilot strobe lights.

  • Amen. The headlights were fine where they were. Moving them was a stupid idea and a waste of money. Not to mention the BN units with dropped headlights look like they have nasty overbites....

Yeah thats true about the headlights and its not BN at all Santa Fe started doing that to there SD40-2's and others? After having the chance to see and photograph the last BN SD40-2 which has its headlight dropped it just doesnt look right it messes up the BN logo!

  •  I take it none of you have ever operated a unit with headlights vs noselights? In snow?
