You've got plenty of Amtrak and NJT action reasonably close by at New Brunswick -- but if its freight action you want -- why not ride the train down to Philadelphia, where there is all kinds of activity (visible from public streets, bridges etc.) within walking distance of 30th Street Station.
Enjoy and Happy Xmas !!

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you out there. However, I would suggest you post this in the Trains magazine Railroads forums, where you'll get much better results.

I live in NJ and have been looking for a railfanning trip, but dont know of any good spots or any excersions trips to go on. The only place i've checked out was Browns yard in Old Bridge but there is not much action there and if you get to close well you know Norfolk southern. Anyone have any ideas. Joe A
