What scale and what type/brand of turnout is involved and which ground throw did you use (e.g. 202S, 101R, etc)? The fix will probably be pretty simple but the advice likely depends on the above.

You need to adjust you linkage so that the points are held tightly over in both directions. This may involve adjusting the lever arm to increase the distance the points move for the travel of the ground throw.

To set up the ground throw, shim your turnout to half way thrown, set up the linkage so that the ground throw is in its center position, install the linkage, remove the shims and test.

An alternate is to add an over center (toggle) spring to the turnout, like the Peco design, then the ground throw just has to kick it to one side or the other of the toggle spring.

The bent wire spring mentioned often in MR works great and the cost is nothing.

Follow the advice in Nigel's post above. My staging yard had seven Atlas code 100 #6 turnouts that worked perfectly with Caboose throws installed basically as he described, without the over center springs. If you accidentally got an N scale throw, it probably won't have enough travel but the HO versions all should be fine.

There is an article on installing Caboose Graound throws on the NMRA Beginner pages at:
http://www.nmra.org/beginner/ground_throw.html that might give you some help.
